How safe would a pickup with stuff locked in the cab be overnight at a motel? Is west or south Birmingham safer?

If it were me, I would look for a motel 20 miles or more outside of the city.

I would take the equipment into the room anywhere in the entire country.

I have family in Birmingham and you had best take everything inside or it will belong to someone else tomorrow.

I don't know Birmingham but I always stay outside a city. You can usually drive 30 minutes from any city and be in a nice, safe, clean area. If we're "in" a city for a few days, I don't even look at hotels inside. I always stay outside and drive in each morning.

Gary I travel a lot and you almost cannot be too careful. Years ago, I remember always being pleased if I could park with in plain view of a hotels front desk staff. Now, I shy away from that because in a lot of places I suspect the staff is the one pointing their little brother or BF to your vehicle in the first place.

In the 80's, three of us went to Birmingham. The first nite we went out for supper/meeting with a group of guys. When we got back to the room and started comparing conversations we discovered we had all been asked the same question....where are you staying? And then the scary part....after telling where we were staying we had all been offered to borrow a gun from the individual we were speaking with. We changed hotels the next morning!

Hate to sound racist but if you are white, that is not the town to be staying in

Shoot me a PM if you have questions about a specific area. I'm from Jefferson County.
My advice, leave nothing you're not willing to lose in a vehicle anywhere. Best bet in the Birmingham area is south, as in Hoover or Shelby County, next would be the over the mountain areas of Homewood, Mountain Brook or Vestavia. Look to 459 and points south along US 31and I 65. If you end up on the west side stay out of Bessemer proper. The only Bessemer hotels I would consider would be those off Academy Drive close to Walmart.
Stay off the north side, period.

If you go south and end up on 280 be prepared for traffic. 280 is the most traveled route in the entire state.

I wouldn't call Birmingham particularly any more unsafe than any other mid sized city. Like all others it has it's good and bad areas. The usual precautions of head up and on a swivel applies as it does anywhere.

You'll find garbage everywhere nowadays... But it sure seems like you find the majority of it in cities.

I guess "convenience" and "opportunity" mean different things to different people.

I take the opposite approach. I try to stay in city centers where the hotels of secured parking. Also tends to be closer to what I'm there for, better accommodations, services and things to do.

Just a tiny step up from Jackson MS. You'll be lucky if they only take your stuff and not your whole pickup.
