If you don't like baseball start your own thread, I don't want to hear that I haven't watched major league baseball on this thread. Looking for a Phillie fan or two to discuss baseball.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

My Wife's brother is a scout for the Phillies and has been for twenty years in the MS and surrounding areas. He watches baseball games 365 days a year it seems. He has a League Championship ring and of course a World Championship ring. The later is as big as a fifty cent piece and is studded with a ruby P surrounded by diamonds. Pretty cool ring. Sorry I do not follow baseball but I know he said they had a pretty good team this season and was tied or ahead in their division a while back. LLL

a while back I thought they could do it..they have some issues for sure..short on startng pitching..short on having an excellent bullpen and lack of consistent hitting.. [all things needed to make the playoffs]other than that they look good...in reality they are acouple of players short..they are not going to make it this year

When the Phillies hired Joe Girardi as manager I thought it might be a good choice, now I am not so sure. Many times this season when a player had a good day at the plate it seemed to me the next day he got a day off. For example the other day Hererra supplied most the offense by hitting a double and a homerun, next day he is on the bench. That wasn't the first time that happened to him. It also happened multiple times to Hoskins, Segura, Harper and dang near everyone. I also think he leaves something to be desired the way he handles the pitchers.

Some teams play as units with individuals working toward the goal of winning the game, division etc. Some teams have individuals trying to work as a unit but their individual stats and commercial endorsements get in the way of team playing and at the upper level of the sport there is a major difference. This year's Brewer team is somewhat like the former, not one member voted to the all star game and they won't have a candidate in the hunt for MVP but they win games and several team members have contributed to helping them win games. Their 100 million salary is about 20th in the MLB and very far below almost any other team that is contending and many that are not.
It has been since Steve Carlson and Mike Schmidt and others that I have followed the Phillies closely. Gene Segura a former Brewer is probably their most consistent hitter.

Some of these managers feel as if they constantly have to tinker with the lineup to justify their position as manager.

Several years ago Cleveland had a designated hitter by the name of Travis Hafner. NOTE, I SAID DESIGNATED HITTER. He doesn't play in the field. Cleveland had a double hitter and in that double hitter, Travis hit 3 home runs. He may have had other hits also but he had 3 home runs. The reason I remember this is the manager gave him the next day off. My dad and I still laugh and joke about that today. Travis must have tired himself out trotting around the bases so he needed to rest the next day. The manager's explanation was that he was scheduled to have the day off. Sure rest your hot hitter. He should have waited a few days and let him play while he was hot.

That is exactly my point CH, it seems when they have a good day they earned a day off instead of staying in the lineup and carrying the team for a few games. I get a kick out of relief pitchers. They pitch 2 innings over 3 days and then they can't be used the 4th day in a row so they get the day off. I played softball until I was 50, when we played in a tournament we sometimes played 6 games in a day. That's what we got for being in the loser's bracket early..

Many teams have a ton of egos in the dugouts and many times resolving the "sand box" issues takes precedence over managing the game. A lot of huge contracts have a slug of multiples involved in them and having to work within those foul lines can change how things take place. This is especially true when teams have a shot at the playoffs and a bunch of trades are made mid season to try and move ahead and not of those players were part of the spring training, early season or how the players would be platooned prior to those trades. If that occurs for two or 3 years on a major scale the manager is managing mostly players he neve worked with or thought about prior to taking the helm. Managers are actually quite easy to replace and most get recycled on to other teams in some form or another. Some will find good to better fits and some will not.

Hererra had two hits last night, he got another day off for tonight. Tonight's starting lineup has 3 starters in it. True, there are some injuries, but not that many. It almost looks like a Triple A or Double A lineup for tonight. The team is 3 1/2 games behind the Braves and the manager throws out a lineup like that. The leadoff batter is hitting .240, the clean-up batter is hitting a scorching .219 and now get this, the number 5 hole hitter is batting .000.

Seems to me if a player is seeing the ball well and hitting well …. You have him do what he is payed to do…. Play ball.

I have found that I enjoy the game much more now that I watch any team any night. I don’t just follow one or two teams anymore. Watch any major league game that is on. Heck , I can only name a few of the Tigers players !!!

Oh, and finally—- I think pitchers should hit….. and get rid of the shift… play the positions and serve it up !! LOL

The Phillies have been on a bit of a roll since I started this thread. Is Moosetrot a Wisconsin Badger fan?

They pounded the Brewers pretty hard today! The Phillies have one of the easiest schedules left for those in contention so they should fare well if they play well.

No the rest of their schedule is. Brewers have been blown out of 2 of their last 3 games so hopefully that gets out of their system.

Pitchers absolutely should hit at all levels. 4 years of starting as a college pitcher with zero at bats. I was robbed. The game is impure!!
