I got a load of wheat for chicken feed from a farmer I did some beaver removal for. This should last the winter. smile The trailer is 6' x 24' It is going in on a load of corn screenings.

You must have a couple more chickens than I do!

If you want your chickens to lay well, you'll have to add some calcium and protein.

Make sure you have the wheat tested for nutrition to balance your ration, wheat can be variable in the amount of protein.

They have oyster shell full time. The protein was 17 on the wheat. Most layer is 16-19 I have about 30 chickens right now.

Yes calcium supplements, oyster shells etc. for calcium. Probably need more protein if laying hens that are laying heavy and you may want some type of scratch type grains to help in the gizzard to grind up the feed. Hard wheat has more kick then soft wheat does.

I've been thinking of buying a load of wheat for my birds too. Chicken feed has gone up 40% since January here.

If you can buy it from a farmer it will cut your cost 50%. I have a bin to put it in, and have got my chicken feed in bulk from guys I remove beaver for when they call. Depending on what you get you may have to supplement it some, but it sure cuts the cost. Even a pickup load at a time helps. I lined up a guy with a seed plant and seed is screened to size of grain too. So I will get small and cracked grain from him too. He will fill those square grain bags and load them in the pickup.

Illinois spoiled us as far as chicken food. We had 3 grain elevators to chose from. Here they don't raise enough grain to have elevators like I was used to. Everything is bagged and our best outlet is Tractor Supply. The wife's chicken herd has been cut down a bunch.

I keep layer mix at all times, but will add whatever I can find.

Mine get fish guts frequently , as well as grass clippings.

Mine free range all day. So they get what they want for greens. I cut up beef fat and they get it too. I used to get the band saw cleanings from the meat shop. It was a mix of bone, fat and meat. The meat shop closed so that is gone.
