Most of my attempts at lure making have had less than stellar results. This one however is a winner that I came up with without even trying. Smoked some pork ribs last year and as I was emptying the drippings the thought struck me this would be a great canine lure: smokey goodness, fatty and sweat with a complexity from all the seasonings. My dog, of course, enthusiastically agreed. Coyotes, racoons and skunks did too. Just smoked some pork ribs again yesterday and got another 30 ounces of supreme food lure. I coat my ribs with mustard then dry rub, smoke 3 hours. Rub with butter and brown sugar wrap in foil with a splash of apple juice for steaming moisture, smoke another two hours. Unwrap the ribs and slather on the Sweet Baby Rays and smoke another hour. Try the recipe. Everyone will love it. Then try the drippings on your trapline. Everyone will love it. You're welcome!

It lured me in, I'm gonna try it.
Now I'm hungry again.
Makes sense my dog licks the grill drippings all the time.

Let me sugar coat this

I had great luck with the leftover smoked ribs bones one season. Saved a bunch of them and froze them in a bag and used them buried in middle of trash mound sets in bean fields later winter. We caught several coyotes on those.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

It seems like any time i've ever added the smell of smoke to the bait or lure it would enhance it. I noticed the smell overall would be almost thrown off further by adding some, say for example liquid smoke to the mix. While liquid smoke is most likely not as good as smoke oil, it still works wonders in getting animals to approach sets. Using about a shovelful of fire pit ashes as the backing of a set seems to be a nice addition for dirt hole sets as well.

Seeing your post makes me laugh. I’m in big trouble at home right now because I took the dripping from smoking ribs last Saturday and dumped it in grass in the backyard. I now have a hole I could fit a basketball in and my two dogs just won’t quit! I used pretty much the same recipe as you from a pellet grill recipe. First thing I thought of was dang I have to make some more and bottle it up!
