I don't know anything about the Texas Rangers or their history. One mans account of his time. Tough SOB's. Not PC for sure. No parsing of words for killers and thieves. I liked it.

The author writes a lot about fighting Indians. Thankfully he did not fight any Pawnee, Pawnee. You should be able to read it and not be offended.....

Savell you best call your Mama and tell her you thought this was so cool you shared it with all your buddies on the Internet. Because "awesome, thanks" just sounds like a brush off to your poor ol Mama.

The people of Texas during those times were just a little "rugged". Gillett and some others stayed a lot at a springs camp about a mile or so from where I live. In the early 1900's , Pancho Villa days, nearly all ranchers and ranch hands along and near the border were "Rangers". Many of them never wore a badge but carried a warrant of authority issued by the adjutant general. They were often referred to as Minute Men or Frontier Batallion. They had the full power of a Ranger. I will try to put one on here of my uncle. He was a full blown Ranger of fame. The Ranger Commander is Frank Hamer and his signature is on here.
Sit on your horse on top of a ridge, look out across the country and tell me there is no God.

Wow! Thank you for posting and sharing the history and photos both Cedar Hacker and Savell! Yes, those early Texas were a rough and rugged bunch; but that kind of lifestyle was necessary in those days. Thank you again for bringing this up because I truly believe it must be our generation that carries these stories and history on. It was our generation that got to see the last of the true blue old country folks that wore overalls and work clothes all week, but put on there one and only suit and tie to go to church on Sunday. I remember going there with them as a little boy and the Church having an outhouse cause no running water or electricity. As you Savell, my great, great, great grandfather was a ranger as well. His name was Benjamin Highsmith and he was what they called a 'runner boy' for the Alamo when he was little. I remember the first time I went to the Alamo when I was a little boy my Daddy had me turn when we walked in the door and look at a plaque on the wall, and his name was there on a plaque. He said this is your family. He's buried in Utopia, Texas. Here is a story about his life. https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/highsmith-benjamin-franklinMy great grandaddy married a Highsmith, her name was Velma, which was Benjamin's great grandaughter. Savell, I remember a few months/years back you posted about traveling to Roberston County for a funeral I believe and it involved the Daughters of the Conferderacy. I meant to comment on the thread, but I was working long days and the thread slipped away. I live in Milam County, just across the Brazos from Hearne and I remember hog hunting on a place there that had a confederate cemetery. The Daugthers would come and clean it up and make it look nice. Very humbling! There is a lot of great history here, thank you for sharing. Chancey

If you enjoyed that book Clayton, I think you may be interested in another book called "Taming the Nueces Strip" It's the story of Captain McNelly's Rangers and their ventures down in south Texas. Instead of fighting Indians they were mostly taking care of Mexican bandits and other outlaws. They nipped stuff in the bud. Chancey I have it coming. Pretty cool where this thread has gone.
