How many books have you written Jack ? This is only the third actual book. All three are wildly different from each other. I've written chapters for other books, usually dealing with wildlife management or certain species (wolves, wolverines, mink). Twenty or so articles for FFG and other outlets. I have a few more books in various stages of completion. I'd really like to finish another novel (at 250 pages and about three years of effort right now, adventure in the Russian taiga), a book on North American marten, and toying with putting together a field guide-type book on Idaho herpetofauna. On the other hand, I'm a field biologist, not really an author. Jack

Jack This book description needs some more expounding in detail....these books are more, way more than the unique field biologist's technical entries, fascinating as those studies are, all in themselves. In one book, his talents in the art of description flow in his book of poetry woven into stories of his experiences. In another, the adventures of a man in the wilderness that makes the reader rein in patience in a mighty way to not rush ahead , in their anticipation of what is next to happen. A story of triumph and tears. And now this third book ....a combo of life, studies, garnished with humor, with Jack's own unique and rare perspective on his mighty ride of life. His clarity in experiences so well described in details , as to make a movie in full colour run in your mind as you read. On the surface....face to the wind....

Jack, do you make more on direct purchases, or online through a major retailer? The previous book, The Last Hunt, I made more on each sale from Amazon and other online places. It didn't matter if it was Kindle, paperback, or hardbound, it was just about a dollar per book. With me purchasing the book in volume, then turning around and selling them directly, I was netting about $0.74 a copy. As mentioned earlier, I don't have a publicist or an agent or an attorney, and I'm a poor salesman. I enjoy the writing, and I hope someday to break even on the financial end. Because the only advertisement I get is word-of-mouth, I doubt if I'll ever recoup my initial costs of the books. If success as an author is measured in pennies and dollars, I'm a complete failure. Jack You and me both. My total income from writing is less than $10k. So far. Jim

Yeah, I'm convinced that in the book-selling arena, it takes money to make money. Advertising, traveling to "book signings", and probably a professional publicist, are obligatory to make any real money. Your income, "probably less than $10k" is different than mine. My net is "probably less than $10" (forget the "k").

I'm talking about income over a 25-year period. Won a contest and award with cash attached on an early story, and sold some later fiction for 7-8 cents per word. Pretty paltry pay for the amount of work involved.
I've finished a novel recently and am now looking for an agent. My impression is that only big names have publicists. All of these people take a cut of your advance and royalties.
Good luck on sales of your new book. I'd like to get a copy too, and will PM you.

Jack !!
PING !!!
I received your lovely book !
Thank you , and for signing it and sentiments.
I had to immediately skim through it.
I can see right now , I am in for a full colour video movie playing in my mind as I read. And no doubt, times that I will need to reign myself in to a disciplined dressage trot, like a collected horse, making myself not get in a hurry to read, to find out what happens next.
It will sit proudly on my office desk, right by some art tools and my next greatest book I've been in the midst of reading, Mark Levin's American Marxism.
I will take turns reading them both , in careful portions.
One phrase caught my eye ...interestingly, as I skimmed....your love of flight....isn't just a means of transportation ...but beauty craved and never taken for granted ....how fitting for me to catch that phrase , out of all this book, just flipping pages, not 10 minutes after opening the package. I miss flying all the time, as you do. Not a day goes by I don't look upon my jagged mountain peaks, the dimension of sweeping U valleys, and see myself in a plane or chopper way up there.
Thank you, sir Jack, for such a fine life story.

I received my book also. Thank you very much Jack. I have to say that even though I did a bit of editing on this book and tried to repair all the grammatical errors and at least some of the gross exaggerations I must admit that I enjoyed it even more the second time ! Lots of knowledge and many belly laughs in this little gem. Just like sitting at the kitchen table with Jack. The only thing missing was the glass of rye. Thanks again Jack !!
