Resident goose season opened here yesterday and we put a hurting on them this morning. We are known to "not have any birds" here, but if you take the time to scout you will find them. It took two weeks of scouting to finally find a feed with enough birds to have a good hunt. We got 24 birds with 5 shooters, a dang good hunt for NC.

The only thing these greasy resident geese are good for is jerky or snack sticks. We grind up all of the breast meat and make snack sticks in the smoker with jalapeno and cheese. Some of them even get pickled. They are great that way, but any other way they are terrible. I've cooked a lot of geese on trips out west and they are great because they are grain fed migrators. You can cook them like a sirloin steak. Not these though!!

Buzz, bismuth is the way to go in the older guns. Check out Boss Shotshells. All their waterfowl loads are bismuth. The issue with traditional bismuth is that its soft and "splats" on impact instead of penetrating. Boss copper plates theirs so that it penetrates better, I've been super impressed with them.

Me and one of my buddies shot 20 Ga 3" #3 Boss Bismuth today in the goose field. 1 1/8 oz payload. It sure folded them up

That’s a nice haul!! X2 on the Boss shells but always out of stock lately. A little trick i learned after smoking one of my grinders is to use a little handheld metal detector on the breasts to make sure there’s no shot left in them. Also a grinding plate with holes bigger than the shot helps!

Awesome! I am headed up to the Kawartha Lakes area next week with my 8 and 9 year olds for an early goose hunt. Can't wait to see my brother and do some (admittedly poor) shooting LOL

Just happy to be here.

Are those Brandt’s or Canadian? For here in Iowa I would consider those lesser’s.

Greater Canada’s. We don’t have any lessers out here! We kill a pile of them in Kansas though

Enjoyed yesterday in the field. Ended up with a Canada that was double banded and 10 years old
they were trying out riveted bands and regular because the geese are living longer than the bands and they pull them off
