Cut one down a few months ago the wood looked great for lumber but one tree was not worth what it would take to get a few boards out of it.

How did you have a Ash that big still alive? I haven't seen a live Ash bigger than 3 to 4 inches since the Borer killed them off. I have live Ash, but its all regrowth since the die off.

you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!

The base of the Ash Tree was 3 feet wide. All the other Ash trees on the property are younger. This was the oldest of the bunch.

I use them to smoke beef or lamb but no matter what you have a lot of wood there.

Y'all keep them bugs up your way. We got one on the homeplace I'd hate to lose. It's probably the only tree on the whole place not for sale. It's almost five foot diameter and the only reason its still standing is it sits just our side of the line and on the steepest side hill on the place.

We have a lot of ash saplings one to 3 inch . Do you expect they will survive the bug and go on to mature, or will the bug end up getting them to. old243

Ash make superior snowshoe frames for hunting shoes.
We only have black ash here.

I lost around 350 large ash trees to the emerald ash borers. I had 6 large ash trees make it. I probably have well over a thousand small ash trees from the glut of seeds the trees produced as they were dying. I am starting to think the 6 remaining large ash trees will continue to live.

I saw that Ohio is cloning ash trees that survived the borers. I am thinking about contacting the woman in charge of the program and letting them collect seeds and material for cloning from my surviving large ash trees.

I have one remaining small ash tree in the corner of my yard. All the others died but this one seems to still be in good shape. Was going to cut it but am leaving it, just in case.

Most of mine are dead or nearly with only a few green limbs. I have maybe 8 to take down yet. Won't be enough to feed mu boiler all winter. I will be out of fire wood to cut on the farm this year. Only took 4 years.

everyone has a different situation/opinion.

I don't do turn so I'd make the crotch pcs into lumber/boards. the rest I'd leave in the woods.

I don't find ash to be a very appealing wood to make stuff out of, kind of bland grain and coloring.
I do have some in my stash but I would add more if it was crotch with lots of figuring,

Far as I'm concerned in my woods its best use is to leave it standing dead for woodpeckers and other wildlife.

As for firewood, there is better stuff that gives much more heat so why spend the time with something that requires more work to get the same amount of heat?

More work? Ash is easy as heck to split.

Regrowth/Saplings grow for a few years but the ash borer will get them eventually.
