As usual for this time of year, we are getting a lot of calls, and guys asking while making their supply orders.... "How does the coyote market look?"

I usually write up a brief statement for my wife to read to people that call and ask, and this year's report is brief.

I've talked to a few of the main buyers that end up with the bulk of the coyotes from the regions that are the most desirable usually.

They have the same opinion, and this is what they've told me:

"There IS a market for Coyotes again this year. Coyotes from the better areas, Like Montana, The Dakotas, and parts of Nebraska and even a bit farther south will be fine. GOOD heavy Coyotes, and the better colored Semi-heavies will be in line with last year for the most part".

Color and fully prime IS important.

Those of you that have an off color coyote, or with damage (Neck mites) will have a tough time marketing possibly.

Of course there is other areas, like Idaho and parts of other states that produce good coyotes too, but the people I've talked to didn't mention them, probably because we were talking about the 'Coyote Belt' and the prices for this season.

There IS a trim market. There IS other companies picking up where Canada Goose left off.

I know that production costs and lots of other factors come in to play every season, and I'm not trying to influence anyone to go out and hurt themselves financially to pursue coyotes, I'm merely reporting what I've been told.

I DO know one thing for certain though. You can't sell what you don't have.

Have a good Labor Day,

John

John wrote a very informative piece that every coyote trapper should read at least twice.

The most important four words are “fully prime IS important”.

I know trapping coyotes in September is much easier than trapping them in November, but waiting will put more money in your pocket. IMO.

Not trying to hijack John’s post. Just adding to it.

I haven't heard much about eastern coyotes, to be honest. But, I'm sure that being prime, and the better color(s) will be important.

The harvest size is always a factor too, and that could come into play this year. I've talked to a lot of predator control guys that found exactly what I did this spring and summer. A lot of 'dry' coyotes and smaller litter sizes, over a fairly large area. It COULD effect things a bit, but only time will tell. We talked about in depth at Coyote Days. The neck mite damage and other factors will be a factor to consider too.

I don't have a crystal ball, but I do know people that are involved at the 'other end", and I'm just passing on what was told to me.

I do know that every year when buying 'cats, I have at least a dozen people that say something like "Gee, if I knew they were worth something, I'd have caught more"

I'm a trapper, and an optimist. I still stand by my earlier statement that you can't sell what you don't have.

John

Over prime isn’t a set date. It is a condition of the pelt and fur quality. I’ve seen coyotes over prime in mid December. I’ve also seen coyotes still in prime in March.

Multiple factors involved. A trapper needs to know what to look for to tell when pelts are past prime and going down in value.

As above most bang on the money from the above posters.

A real old time coyote grader trained by HBC took about 3 hours going through 200 coyotes after he showed me 10 samples of over prime if I could pick them out. after about 150 the lights came on. Remember that there was a coat trim boom back in the 1948-55 era. Sorry I don't have a picture of my jacket from then. They were melon lined with an elastic middle back ban (brought out the ladies top ends nicely).

"over prime" the long guard hairs are also weaker and break when used as a collar, so you get it looks like a fur ball in subsequent years. Parka's up here are worn from Nov-March most years so you want something to last.

Thanks gentlemen, that is what I thought. Where I am from it could happen from the middle of December to the middle of February.

field conditions play another part in this
lots of big weeds field edges = flank guard hair loss
early harvest fields worked under = no field mice
conditions of 1 aug when the new hairs are growing in play a role

just think of how human hair grows in = change of diet = antibiotics taken = weak colotin ( spelling)going into the new hair = weak spot to break
