actually it was monday but the consequences are just hitting home today. First time in 3-4 years that i had health insurance. It ended in june. Monday I had a ladder slip out from under me (6-8 ft high ) and fell and broke my radius at the head. I had braced myself for the +/- 10 k bill and the 6-8 weeks recovery. I got notice yesterday that it will be more like a 25k bill and 3 month recovery. we will get through this but i am getting really tired of the "one step forward 3 steps back" approach to life.

That stinks man. Hopefully you get the family on major medical insurance after this. It won't cover much but helps a lot with the big stuff.

Praying for a speedy recovery

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Actually the pain hasn't been horrific. kept me awake the first night - but after that has been bearable. Being self employed has its benefits -- but this aint one of them. The wife has insurance (good) through her work, but i couldn't justify the 850+ to add my daughter and myself to the policy. Gov ins was only 400 but i was making too much money this year to qualify for the subsidy. If i had the insurance would have still cost about 10 k. Those of you with health insurance covered by your employer ------ BE SURE TO THANK THEM.

Thanks for the offer Jack -- but we will make it -- it just gets frustrating when things start finally improving and you get a somewhat major setback. Maybe its just the painpills and the beer talking -- but there are many others who could use that more than me. My daughter is helping out with the work ( she changed an alternator and a belt on a booster pump yesterday) -- I had to cancel a couple of large jobs and rearrange my schedule but will still have the best year in my companies history (about 3 years this time). Just venting about all the systems that worked ok before the government intervention.

I flipped a four wheeler several years ago and the from rack came down on my radius at the wrist. My radius is now about 1/2 inch shorter than it was and lots of PT to get back most of my range of motion. Not fun.

Negotiations with the providers works. I have Ins and I’m still negotiating the amount Ins won’t cover. It may not be huge numbers but every little bit helps.

Get better.

Sorry to hear that Dave. You're right, we self employed have a lot to be thankful for in many ways but not having health insurance that is affordable is a crappy deal.

Hope you can wheel and deal with the providers some and get that bill whittled down. And get well!!!

surgery went well and just had a followup visit this am. they removed the stitches and put me in a brace - said i am supposed to wear it for a month. Now i just have to get the fingers and thumb stretched out and working again. pretty much guarranteed that i won't be 100% by trapping season but it looks like i may at least be functional -- we will see how it holds up to fleshing beaver.

Good luck on it. Hope the providers will work with you.

I hope so too -- haven't got all the bills yet but looks like in the 25-30k range. but if you add up what my premium would have been and the max out of pocket on the plan i would have had it would have been 17k +/-. so as long as i don't do stupid things every year i would be money ahead. I just changed the money i was putting aside for a newer service truck, and the money i wasputting aside for health insurance into paying the med bills. maybe next year? maybe not? The wife is working with all the entities involved on discounts and payment options.
