The day had finally arrived and I’d be joined by my normal gun hunting partner…my son. I had bought both my boys bows about 12 years ago and they enjoyed shooting them, but lacked confidence on killing a deer with them and drifted back to guns.
Well, about 3 years ago my wife calls from work and sends a pic of a bow a security guard at her work was selling. He was asking $300 and the case alone the bow was in was worth that so I told her to get it. It was an Obsession bow, with a $250 sight, $150 arrow rest, and all the essentials. Only issue…it’s a left handed model and I’m right handed, lol.
I tried then to get my son back into it, but he wasn’t interested.
This year however, was different. He got a buck on camera that he’s been dreaming of and decided to take the bow to a new archery shop that just opened and get it fitted for him. After getting the draw adjusted and new arrows he was in business. We practiced every evening and he got confident out to 50 yards with broad heads and was ready to go. His buck had been coming in every evening, so his friends and I encouraged him to go opening morning and take a doe.
I had put up a lock on near one of my ladder stands just for this purpose. This spot is a drain full of oaks and beauty berries and just funnels deer through.
With him in the lock on and me in the ladder, we had deer all around us before we could even see our sights on the bow.
I guess the excitement was too much for him, because right at good shooting light he released on a doe and that was it! At the (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) she bolted but we could tell he had made a lethal shot. He was surprised that most of the other deer stood around and went back to feeding. No loud boom to scare them off. I text and asked if he wanted to take another, and he said the next time an arrow is released it will be on “his” buck.
We had to wait 45 minutes for the other deer to finally move on out. (I don’t like climbing down and giving away my location with deer around.)
These pics are of him in the lock on, the arrow, blood, and the end result. She made it all of 60 yards.
