This topic came up recently in another thread.
Posting a pic of flagging i use. Credit to Charlie Dobbins landtrapping book.
Bought a box of old cassette tapes from a thrift store for couple bucks. Probably a lifetime of flagging in the box.
Make a wad of several lengths of tape. Tie them off with some monofilament.
Pull several loops out and snip them at end of the loop to leave long single strands hanging.
This wad gets tied off on a nearby overhead branch by the set.
Tape flutters in the slightest breeze. Can add a weight to the wad too to keep the wad hanging down but the tape still flutters in breeze. An old bolt or nut makes a cheap weight.
In NE we can't use feathers at sets with footholds unless it is at least 30' from the set. This flagging isn't feathers of course and it works well right over or near the sets.
Its subtle, more natural browns and black tones too.
Not as easily seen by other people but the movement picked up easily by a cat.
Make several up ahead of time and put them in small ziplock bags to keep them from tangling up. Light to carry a few bags in your coat pocket too.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Charlie was quite innovative in his techniques and thinking. His philosophy helped many a trapper years ago and to this day.

I miss visiting with him. I remember how he had his truck laid out to this day. A modest bunk bed with sleeping bag to one side of his truck bed and lots of storage room organized in the other areas as needed. He mostly tail gated in front of his on the road home sharing his ideas and findings to any who would listen.:)

Can't get much more simple than that.

Thanks Jim

I buy cheap tinsel at the dollar store, but I'll have to try this. I have the cassette tapes laying around.
Thanks for posting.

I use the lid from a sardine can on occasion.Usually just after lunch.
I bend up the bottom to hold a little chunk of castor.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
