If base is 6” will there be a discount at FHA or Groney?

I don't know why there should be any discount because of base width.
I know NAFA used a scanner to measure rats I don't know If FHA does. Groney doesn't like wood but I never thought he down graded my rats because of It.

Thanks. Always used wire but the more I think about it I wonder if the sides of wire “stretch” and thin the pelt.

You are spot on. Wire acts like a spring and yes It will thin a rat hide. Especially those medium sized rats that are placed on those wire stretchers. If you have to squeeze that stretcher to get the hide started It's going thin that hide as It dies. We call those paper rats and you will be down graded.
In my opinion if you leave a rat on a board or wire more then 2 days your over drying them. Get those rats off as soon as the nose area dries. In about a day the rat will be dry enough to hold It's shape. If your short of forms take those rats off and just hang by the nose to finish drying. Once those rats are off the boards pack them In cardboard boxes.
But every thing depends on the premature of your drying area. Cold drying will take a bit longer but you end up with a better quality hide.
A simple test Is to take some of your rats off the forms In 2 days then leave a few rats on the forms for 6 days and see which are better.
