How long is your season, Scott? We can hunt bear Sept. through November but baiting is allowed only in September. I just dropped the young fellow off at the site. Hopefully some pics by dark.

Iowa,
Sat opener zone 31 Minn, saw sow with 2 yearlings and sow with 2 this season cubs. It's early. Bait= trail mix, peanut butter, popcorn, 3 kinds candy, liquid molasses, fryer grease...they're hungry up here. My 23rd season. Walleye and perch fishing is slow so far.

Dang 330.
I used to freek out and got frustrated when machines showed up close to my spots but learned it mattered notONE bit.
Heck, now I kinda welcome a bit of noise.
Cough,clear throat, ect.
Bear are not as spooky as most believe.
Now older bear with experience may behave different.
Some of my very best spots over the years have been within 50 yards off MAJOR hiways.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

Thanks, Rick. The young fellow is on his way up as I write this. This will be his second time out and I'm so confident based on camera pics that I'm taking a scale out to weigh the bear. Several bear are hitting the bait but no monsters. The biggest would probably go 275, live weight. There's two or three in the 200-250# class but I don't know how fussy he will be. He took a 235#er last year and is hoping for something bigger. We'll see. I'll report back after dark.

Any luck, Scott?

Early on it doesn't seem to matter, we feed cookies, cookie dough and sweeter baits. Currently we're feeding Granola & Trail Mix, the trail mix is predominantly nuts and gets consumed first and then the granola 2nd, the corn is hard and past the milking stage but with acorns dropping the nut mix seems to mimic mother nature a little closer.

Another thought that seems to make a difference where I've hunted or helped tend baits - Depending on what your hunting pressure is like, it's advantageous to know what your neighbors are using and switch it up. Some of the spots I have seen, there is a bear bait / strike bait off every 2 track. If everyone is running donuts, use granola.

Personally, I've hauled in a variety of stuff, from carcasses to bread to grease to donuts to lucky charms cereal.

Done honey burns and the grease tracking tricks too.

Granola with pie filling mixed in worked well the last time I killed one.

Good luck to you, Scott. He took a bear last night. Turned out to be smaller than the one he shot last year. Busy schedule so he decided to take it. He shot it with his bow and it ran just forty yards. His second bear ever and his first death moan.
