When you want to compare the development between old school and the first high end trap that changed the way we design traps today.

Love the MJ 600, just can't afford to buy them at today's prices.

If I understand correctly there is no mechanism for setting pan tension. Looking at these closeup pictures that appears to be a Myles (? Spelling) trigger. What kind of pan tension can one expect with that setup?

I will do a little more digging for the rated poundage (rumor is 24 oz), but when I used them in AZ and NM. I made no adjustments for coyotes or cats. if you want it to spring easier you can take a file to the one of the dogs, but you better not take off to much, as you might get ur finger later when setting and it will hurt. I never waxed my traps, that may/will effect pan tension. traps are not an exact science to me as their are to many variables caused by dirt, rain, snow, ice, wax and rust. and any other material trappers put on or over a trap.

its like adjusting a Montgomery dogless, you have ur own touch. I used alot of those also in AZ/NM

The Miles Trigger is found in Wiley Miles Book Scientific Coyote Trapping: originally sold by Gerald Weiland, you can get a copy at Sterling.

Due to jaw spread restrictions in NY and a pan tension requirement, I use my old MONTGOMERY number 2 round jaws and 1 1/2 round jaws (both with dogs)

Glenn told me he did 3 strokes with a file to cut that groove to get the setting he wanted on the 600s that was 40 years ago.

If you want more tension you might work on the groove some new springs increase that also.

He was a top hand when it came to trapping, and a professional bull rider in his day. His traps were 30 years a head of their time.

I made the mistake of trying the MJ 600 Sterling when I was in West Texas last year. Only ran 6 of them. BUT fell in love with them. I have about 100 of them now. Few pics

I’m sure that there’s a good reason but why is the chain connection to the trap not in the exact center seems like there are more benefits to it being in the middle

The newer MJ 600 Sterlings are closer to the center than the older ones. I have some MJ 600s made in the 1980s. Their STILL catching coyotes. 41 year old trap. Thats still has strong springs ? That impresses me. Thats why I keep buying them up. Its an investment

I have no doubt they are incredible traps I have one Mines closer to the center I just want to know what the reasoning is for the connection to be off center

I am pretty sure Sterling fur still has some available. They had some at NTA. $45 apiece and your just not going to find used ones for much less unless you get very lucky.

The MJs are good property tough to sell them for what folks want to pay for them and not being able to replace them easily even at the higher cost.

For the MJ 600 Sterling follks. This coyote was caught in the same trap as in the picture above. I was told = My traps is a 1978 model. And their were 1500 of them made. Its says Pat Pending in White on the pan and MJ 600 Sterling on the pan in white also. SO that makes it a 43 year old trap. LoL !
