This coming Saturday will be heading to Deerfield KS in SW corner to chase muley's and whitetails with hopes of getting one in velvet. My first time in that part of the country and looking forward to the scenery as much as the hunt. Weather looks to be pretty warm:

Can anyone provide insight on what to expect for morning and evening deer movement with these temperatures?

Plan to hunt Sunday, 9/19 thru Wednesday, 9/22 and drive back on Thursday, 9/23. Will be hunting private land along Arkansas river as well as some irrigated ag fields.

Thank you in advance,

Dave

I got one . Wad that forecast up and throw it out the window. You think weathermen can predict that far ahead? Hope you get your velvet deer Most around here lost it last week. Smaller ones still have some velvet . But in the 90 in ky = night movement .

I don't hunt the western side of the state, but the deer are moving here in the central parts. We are having lows around 60* so early mornings are good, and so is last light in the evenings. The weather seems to be cooling just a bit every day.

I don't think you'll do much good to sit all day like a November hunt. But if you aren't seeing deer early or late, you're just in the wrong place.

Was at a Western NC wildlife shooting range on Tuesday. Five men were shooting deer rifles at the 100 yard station and 6-8 were a few yards away firing at the pistol range. Right in the middle of a firing session, someone shouts to cease fire. A large doe deer and two yearlings walked right across the range at about the 50 yard distance. Time was 12:30 PM. I asked the rangemaster if that was common and he said it happens every week. Those three deer were on the move during mid-day. Who would have thunk it?

I have a friend who's hunting with a few guys not too far from Wichita. They've taken a couple so far...no velvet racks

I am in western KS. Seeing bucks in hard horn--- seems at least two weeks early. Use to guide and outfit for a living. Early morning only option as its not cooling down until dark, Most if not all deer nocturnal and /or dawn moving. Evening hunt brutal , miserable hot , success minimal. This season needs to be later in the year. KDWP fubarred the muzzleloaders and lets the guys with crossbows hunt all winter.

Dad gum it ks wolfer we can’t agree on anything on here anymore laugh I agree with the miserable part, but I’ve been drilling wheat all week and the mule deer have been coming out early in the evening. I have a feeling it’s because we are so dry. I wish kdwp would move it further into the fall also

About everything in Logan County I have seen the last week is hard horned; both mulies and whitetails. I'm with Pawnee on this one; they seem to be moving in the evening here. Couldn't find any of them over the weekend for youth season.

The trip was for me to hunt Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and my friend to get some business done in the area. My first time in Kansas or anyplace in the southwest past Lincoln, NE.

Some beautiful country you folks have down there:
[Linked Image]

We did some glassing Saturday evening after a 15hr drive and again glassed Sunday morning. Saw lots of doe mulies and only 2 bucks glassing. We settled on a high point overlooking the sage in front of us and an alfalfa pivot about 40yds behind us for Sunday evening hunt. Settled into our make shift ground blind at 3pm, about 95F out with a stiff South wind in our face. First deer spotted at 5:30pm and had pretty steady activity all evening. All does coming out to feed in the alfalfa pivot or a cut corn field pivot to the East. 7:45pm spotted a buck casually following a doe about 500yds out heading towards us and they crossed to my left about 140yds out. A second buck came towards us an passed about 15yds to our right (West) at 8pm. Good activity and was a great first sit.

Monday morning hunted a different site with no deer seen. Monday temps dropped with a stiff North wind and we settled in to the same blind as Sunday at 4:30pm. 5:15pm saw first deer and had about 25 deer come out by 6:45pm, all does. At 6:50pm had a buck coming at us and pass to my left at 60yds. Gave me a standing broadside shot that connected!

We packed up Wednesday and headed to Omaha to stay with some family over-night and back in Wisconsin on Thursday.
I am very grateful for my friend to have connections to hunt on private property and had a great time in SW Kansas. Definitely want to check into trapping December coyotes when my friend and several others go back for rifle season, the amount of tracks was impressive and saw a few live ones too.

Dave
