maybe a rabbit digging a hole to have little ones. If only one hole. That did cross my mind. Why they dig in the wide open is beyond me. There is minor damage in other parts of the yard and a scattering of scat. My hunch is that it's skunk.

Skunks dig up yellow jacket nests ... Didn't know that. We have had a few yellow jacket nests this year, more than normal.

Kill the grubs the problem will end. They sell Diazamein (spelling) crystals to spread on the lawn to get rid of grubs. Look for brown patches of loose sod, if its wet there they could be digging crawlers maybe if no grubs.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!
