Good eating when fresh! Slice in 1/2 and check if interior is solid white, if yes, they're fresh and good.

There are a number of small puffball species and those do appear to be one of them, but I would get a local expert to identify them for you. It's not worth the risk to eat fungus you are uncertain of. Diane found and cooked a giant puffball back in July. It was excellent fried. I've never seen a giant puffball during the Summer. There was no mistaking it for anything else. It tasted good enough that I would not hesitate to order it at a restaurant, if I didn't have easy wild access to giant puffballs. Keith

Smallest puffballs I've ever seen. Most around here are as big as basketballs.

Slice then lengthwise top to the bottom straight down the middle. If you see anything that appears like a stem or undeveloped gills hidden in the middle, discard them. If they are solid, uniformly white they are puffballs.

I've eaten lots of puffballs but those look off to me. That dosen't mean I know they are bad but like stated above slice them and inspect them closely. Please. We have a couple small puffs around here they are as good as the giants but look them over many mushrooms start ball like when very young.

I never saw or heard of those. Or they a type of mushroom? When mature, the will have a thin skin, filled with a greenish grey powder, that's the spoor. Kid's love too stomp them to watch the powder scatter! LOL
