Money generally wins in the long run but in my opinion quality of life exceeds money. It just ain't right. They're fighting the same fight with wind turbines in the Sandhills. Public Power already has the transmission lines built and waiting....they know who will win in the end. There's a formula that never loses.

Very true Gary, we where surprised to see all the wind power in Iowa this summer on our way to Spencer IA. Just crazy, think less then half of them where even running. We got some in Stillwater county to some years back, helps the view of the crazy mountain's.
Let me sugar coat this

There has to be a happy medium, somewhere. As Americans, we cannot have our luxuries without mining, drilling, etc. Yes accidents do happen as in the deepwater horizon, but I don't see nobody giving up their vehicles. Electric car manufacturing and operation will still require mining and drilling!

This reminds me of the Susitna River hydro project. I remember hunting in the area and seeing the flagging tape the surveyors put out. That project would have flooded most of the ground I hunted and I see the dam issue has resurfaced again. You can only destroy the state just once. Actually both Dam studies provide ADFG with a pile of study money. I was involved in the subsistence study. The picture of my fur shed ( Log Cabin) is enshrined on the cover of the subsistence study. So some good things come from these boondoggles. BTW it's a big State and I guess the lower 48 is destroyed by all those dams down there.

Even the smallest dam on a small flow interrupts fish travel and spawning habits but generally the benefits of the dam outweighs the negatives.....salmon being a huge exception. Even a small dam in podunk Nebraska interrupts walleye and white bass runs. Then throw in irrigation and drying up the creeks and rivers when irrigation is done with. That kills alot of fish when the flow is stopped suddenly in August.

The proposed dam which has been dabated for more than forty years now is eighty miles up the Big Su from Talkeetna. They're going to need a road to flood those forty thousand acres. Five to seven billion dollars can buy a lot of alternatives to offset someone's heating bill.

Through the 1980s, I worked on moose, bears, wolves, wolverine in the Talkeetna and Susitna Rivers, trying to understand what impacts there would be from the Watana and Devil's Canyon Dams (it was proposed to be a 2-dam system). From my perspective, being in that country pretty much every day for nearly 6 years, it would have been disastrous. I was certainly happy they decided against the project. I have little doubt, however, that mankind's insatiable thirst for wealth and power will eventually win out over the natural resources, and both the Susitna Project and the similarly disastrous Pebble Mine will eventually go in.
My 2-cents...

One of the proposed sites in the 80's was here. I have a stack of fish studies from that waste of taxpayer money. Now when the current crop of biopoliticians tell me how good the salmon runs are now, I can flip out these studies and say in the 1980's we had this many fish according to you.
The Dams are not going to happen, because they make little economic sense, just like the gas lines.
I love Alaska so much, I still live here.
