Well my son finally killed the deer he was after. He had been following this buck for some time now and was determined to take him. He had been close a few times but just couldn’t quit seal the deal. Last night it happened!
He had almost been talked out of shooting it because some had told him it was only 3.5 and in the 40’s. A buddy and I both said 4.5 and 50’s.
After several stand moves he thought he had him figured out and I told him to just go and eyeball him from the stand. If he wasn’t what he thought he didn’t have to shoot. The wind was finally perfect for his new stand sight so he went.
This buck lived in the middle of the field and we’d get pics late evening or before daylight. When the camera showed deer activity real early yesterday evening he just knew he’d have a shot. What he didn’t realize was he’d have to watch this deer close to an hour before he came down the trail.
Come to find out, the deer was only bedded 125yds away and stood up fairly early in the evening. What was bizarre was he was already on lockdown with a doe. He paced back and forth for 30 minutes and my son was texting the deer was drunk or ate some fermented berries. It wasn’t until the doe stood up that he realized what was going on. For the next 30 minutes or so they made their way slowly into range.
At 22 yards my son made a perfect shot.
But, being inexperienced and not listening to Dad when he called, he got down to go see the deer he videoed going down. I told him to sit at least 45 minutes, but nope, he went down. And when he got to him…he jumped up and went another 50 yards and went down. He called and I told him to back out and come to the house. Well after about an hour and a half we went back.
This “field” is about head high brush with beggers lice, partridge pea, ragweed, etc. I MADE him follow blood even though he wanted to go where he last saw it. What was crazy is we would feel wetness on our hands and see blood from where we had brushed up against it but didn’t see it. We were getting close to where he saw it drop and he started looking for the deer instead of blood. I followed blood and let him sweat a little since he took the “trail” he was certain the deer had took. And in his defense, it probably would have had it not veered off 10ft from the field and died right there. The deer was good and stiff and probably died when he saw it fall the second time, lol. All in all, a good lesson.
Turns out the deer was 4.5 and gross scored 154 and nets 148 1/8. His best deer by far with a rifle or a bow. And seeing how this is his first year bowhunting and only his second deer ever with a bow, I think it will be hard to beat!
First pic is the last trail cam pic before the shot.
