I have more than once had deer come in to a mouth blown rabbit squeel calling coyotes. Not often enough to use it as a deer hunting tactic but its not uncommon

I’m a FIRM believer in the grunt call and rattling…through out the entire year. Light tickling with the antlers right now just mimics bucks getting ready for serious business.
Deer are very very vocal throughout the entire year.
So yeah, early season, pre-rut, rut, post rut.

What do you guys consider pre-rut, anytime after they shed velvet? That's my definition.

With blacktial deer, both Columbian and Sitka, does will come to a fawn bleat, cottontail squeal, etc. anytime. Bucks pretty much only during rut.

Pre rut they tend to be very interested in grunting an (tickling) of antlers. That being said with all the yahoos out hunting anymore with all their fangled gadgets to get closer to deer you can bet the farm once a buck has heard that kind of scenario b4 and responded without seeing what they heard they become very call shy/scared. High pressured areas are best hunted without a sound. Mho

Pa,
called in a lot of deer calling fox and coyote. They seem to like fox pup calls

Tough to get them to stop running after a deer call has been used in Bama.

That's just about the time they shed velvet.

I make it a habit. Call deer to me anytime of the year just because it can be done. Have grunted in 6 buck in an evening sit. Fawn distress can bring doe all year. Last day at last light I have shown friends how well it works. Called in a mink once while distress bleating, far from the water.

Years ago my nephew went hunting with me for his first time. It was really cold and blustery that day. He forgot his gloves and was getting cold. I could tell he wasn't having fun yet. I then asked him if he wanted me to try to call a deer in to us. His eyes grew wide and he said, can you?
It wasn't 10 minutes until his first assisted gut job. Back at camp he told the unsuccessful hunters to go with uncle Kip.
