Buy a used bow on Facebook or Craigslist. Look for an old one, because the new ones are just ridiculous. Buy an archery target for $50 or less and practice in your backyard, or on the public land you mentioned.

Go to your local archery shop. Ask them what the charge is to get fitted for draw length, if you are buying used. If you buy new from the shop, they should do all the fitting for free typically. They may even have some used bows on rack. Bows are like shotguns. If they don't fit you, you won't shoot them well. Many bows today are adjustable for draw length...some are not.

Like said before it's best to go to an archery shop and shoot every bow new or used you are interested in and probably a few that you aren't. Then buy the one that fits you the best and you shoot the best. For a rookie I would not buy used from a private party unless you have shot the bow many times and know that it fits you properly. Buy the best that you can afford and if taken care of properly it will last you a long time. The archery shop will be able to set the bow up for you as well. The bow bought from a private party was set up for them and can and will cause more issues for you. Same goes for a crossbow if that is the way you decide to go.

He'd have to go to the doctor and get diagnosed as unable to use a standard bow to be legal to use a crossbow in Iowa for deer hunting.

I have a feeling Dave could do this pretty quick if he set his mind to it.

It’s very hard to get a crossbow license in Iowa, basically you can’t use an arm or hand, I can’t pull a bow because of neck and shoulder issues, but because I can lift my arms level with my shoulders, and I have very good hand strength it disqualified me for a crossbow license. The one thing is make sure you have a very good back stop as a neighbor lost a window in a combine when the arrow went through a foam block bounced off the ground and hit the window.

Bowhunting can really cut into your trapping time if you let it. Finding places to hunt can be tough too, unless you just hunt public ground.

Buy a used bow. You dont need anything fancy. People still shoot deer with long bows and recurves. Mine is over 10 years old and still puts meat on the table. We have local ranges around here that put on 3d shoots. Normally 20 to 30 targets and around $10. U walk a trail in the woods and they have a pin in the ground to stand at and a deer or other target to shoot at.
