As others have said. Go to an archery pro shop and they will get you fitted for a nice used bow. Probably a couple hundred bucks. Then they will get you set up with arrows, release and target. Probably another couple hundred bucks.

If you have 25-35 yards in your yard with a safe backstop, you can practice for free at your house. A lot of archery shops here have short ranges they will let you shoot at when trying bows out, and will probably help you aight it in. We have a public range here with traditional abs 3-D targets. I think they charge $5 or so to shoot. Not sure about out that way.

Get a ground blind and it will be cheaper and safer than a tree stand.

I also recommend taking a bow hunter education course if you would like to learn a lot more about your new bowhunting endeavor.

Good luck, it’s really fun.

Find a reputable dealer that is willing to help you on your new adventure. There nothing wrong with buying used as long as it FITS YOU. When comes to new equipment you can get into it anywhere from 500.00 and higher. You don't need the most expensive equipment on the market. Look in your area for archery clubs that might have outdoor ranges. Look into your state archery association. They should have a list of clubs and ranges. Good luck, it is enjoyable.

The one thing is make sure you have a very good back stop as a neighbor lost a window in a combine when the arrow went through a foam block bounced off the ground and hit the window.

You need to find a new doctor. Torn rotator cuffs are what allows me a crossbow permit. Too bad I hate bowhunting. I've had my crossbow for 4 years and never took it to the woods yet.

Remember if you put a tree stand on public property in Iowa your treestand is now public. Anyone can use it legally.

I agree with ADC. You need a new doctor if you can't get a cross-bow lisence Bob_Iowa

Iowa has some of the best public ground in the country. Too bad their non resident tags are through the roof.

If a car mechanic can't be trusted, I'd hate to be the guy in the archery shop that tries to help out.

There's got to be at least one reputable archery shop in Iowa. Virginia seems to have a little archery shop every 3-4 towns.

wanna be goat farmer.

dave isn't the kind of fella to go somewhere and start a conversation with anyone. I understand him in that regard, I hate asking for help or permissions from anyone ever. I do it occasionally to help my situation, but I think its even near impossible for dave to buck up and do it.

You live in the deer mecca of north america, go for it!

Non residents wait four years to draw a tag and line up to pay $600+ to hunt iowa

I was lucky and drew the first year I applied. I hunted with a muzzleloader in the second season around Riceville and saw plenty of Deer.

Nice. Archery season seems to get all the hype. I need to look into gun tags, probably interested in zone 4 or 5.

Coonman stick with a gun. You can plant them pretty close to where you shoot them. Near your truck, hopefully. Do you really want to blood trail a deer and then have to drag it back from where ever you find it to the place you could have planted it at. Seems like work to me. I know you do not like work. Me either.

How do you plan on dragging one out? What happens if one expires at the bottom of a steep hill? Can your knees handle it?
