As others have said. Go to an archery pro shop and they will get you fitted for a nice used bow. Probably a couple hundred bucks. Then they will get you set up with arrows, release and target. Probably another couple hundred bucks.
If you have 25-35 yards in your yard with a safe backstop, you can practice for free at your house. A lot of archery shops here have short ranges they will let you shoot at when trying bows out, and will probably help you aight it in. We have a public range here with traditional abs 3-D targets. I think they charge $5 or so to shoot. Not sure about out that way.
Get a ground blind and it will be cheaper and safer than a tree stand.
I also recommend taking a bow hunter education course if you would like to learn a lot more about your new bowhunting endeavor.
Good luck, it’s really fun.

It’s very hard to get a crossbow license in Iowa, basically you can’t use an arm or hand, I can’t pull a bow because of neck and shoulder issues, but because I can lift my arms level with my shoulders, and I have very good hand strength it disqualified me for a crossbow license. The one thing is make sure you have a very good back stop as a neighbor lost a window in a combine when the arrow went through a foam block bounced off the ground and hit the window. You need to find a new doctor. Torn rotator cuffs are what allows me a crossbow permit. Too bad I hate bowhunting. I've had my crossbow for 4 years and never took it to the woods yet.

If a car mechanic can't be trusted, I'd hate to be the guy in the archery shop that tries to help out.

There's got to be at least one reputable archery shop in Iowa. Virginia seems to have a little archery shop every 3-4 towns.

I understand him in that regard, I hate asking for help or permissions from anyone ever. I do it occasionally to help my situation, but I think its even near impossible for dave to buck up and do it.

Nice. Archery season seems to get all the hype. I need to look into gun tags, probably interested in zone 4 or 5.

Coonman stick with a gun. You can plant them pretty close to where you shoot them. Near your truck, hopefully. Do you really want to blood trail a deer and then have to drag it back from where ever you find it to the place you could have planted it at. Seems like work to me. I know you do not like work. Me either.
