Guys,, how many of you have had strokes or someone personal. If so,, did they have a series of mini strokes or something of the like?? Im just asking and hopefully the dr isn’t jerking me around. He said setbacks are common when people have had strokes,, just trying to get a little more educated on it. Thanks gang

Foxkidd44,
There is great variability with strokes and TIA's both. I wouldn't fret too much about all the 1,000 variables that happens to all the others because each person's health status and each person's ability to recover belongs to "that person." Yes, set backs occur. It may not be one step backwards.... or it can be.

I have been involved in the stroke rehab units for many years and I'd steer you to waste no energy on "what may be."
Stick entirely with what "is."

Prayers have continued brother,
Blessings,
Mark

My Mom had a series of mini strokes and recovered from them. The first was in Bob Evans and I screamed to call 911 as I tended to her. She is 88 now and doing fine.

My MIL had what is considered a fairly significant stroke. She recovered well. She had a foot droop so she wears a brace. Not able to walk because of it. But dang she can scream in a wheelchair. No other episodes.

My mom had a stroke about 4 years ago. She recovered well. Was doing good for about 2 years. She's had 3 TIA's in the last year and a half.

As far as setbacks go it's always a possibility. The Dr. isn't jerking you around. He's just giving you the heads up that they are a possibility.

if she keeps having strokes and deteriorating fast , you might ask the DR about Critchfield Jacob's , my Aunt was having stroke symptoms in March , very healthy , ideal weight , exercised , ate very well lots of garden veg and fish about as ideal as you can.

at 60 you would have called her the picture of health

at 63 this winter/spring started showing stroke type symptoms , and seemed to be having more strokes when and DR could not explain why.

CJ is a rapid deterioration

she passed in early September

it is a horrible way to go , but knowing why helps some.

I've had three TIA's over the past fifteen years, the last one being about 7 years ago. I had my carotid arteries checked a few years ago and they were fine. Not much I can do about it I guess; doesn't really concern me too much. Strokes ended up killing most of my mom's relatives (in their 90's), my mom is still living and 94 YO.
Apparently some genetic Scandinavian clotting gene; but I guess that could keep me from "bleeding out" easily.

oh you have that Gene also , at family reunions there is often talk of what blood thinner each person is on

I ended up on it at 41 a few years earlier than my dad I think he was 44

My father inlaw had 2 strokes about a year apart. Last one was 7 years ago. He worked hard at therapy and keep on doing stuff at home after it was done. He has made a lot of recovery but not going to be back to the way he was before. He camps alot, rides his bicycle and hikes.

My B-I-L had a stroke, but he could never admit to it to any one was ashamed he had such a thing being such a sports person all his life.
Left him with a pretty good speech impediment, a limp on his left side and a real slow reply to anything, which was hard for many of us to get used to because of the other speech problem it left him.

He is now retired from work and shows his age rather distinctly as in really old looking, has a parlor continuance about him as well, says he feels fine but he sure does not look it !!

This happened about ten years ago , he is now 62

Every person is different when it come to medical issues, I have seen patients recover completely, some not. Seen some have TIA's one after another, and seen a lot that never had one after recovery.
Sounds like you have a good doctor, he tells you what is going on, not what you want to hear. If you don't trust him you have the option of requesting another doctor, believe me he will not be offended.

Still payers won't hurt, and this family sends ours.

My mom had a series of TIA's over 2-3 years and the last one was more severe, affected her right side facial muscles and her speech and we had her hospitalized with this event. This was all complicated by her being in late early to mid term dementia, which really had the hospital staff confused. She recovered her facial muscles and speech in about 3-5 weeks but her dementia worsened considerably with this event and we needed to put her in assisted living at that time.
As stated above the experiences are so variable and multiple that paying attention to what your seeing with your wife's recovery is where I would spend my time and energy. Set backs are part of the recovery in some ways as the body is working very hard to regain strength and function.

Bryce
