I'm sure many on here have had these but I was out wandering the woods on Saturday and found one about the size of a softball. There were 2 other ones too far gone nearby. I remembered some are edible so I picked it and brought it home. I checked online and confirmed it was safe to eat. I rinsed it off and cut the bottom off where it sat on the ground. I cut it in half and it was solid white with no gills so we're good to go. I sliced it up and cooked it in butter with a little salt and pepper. I'd honestly put it up there with morals and the taste was close to me. No flour dip or coating needed. Here I've been walking past them or sometimes kicking them because I didn't know they were edible. Morales are getting tough to find for me with the goofy weather we've had the last couple years. No rain and too cold it seems.

So who else here picks these?

I pick a lot of different mushrooms, but the one puff ball I tried was the worst one I ever ate. Just terrible texture and taste. I may try one more some day, but for now I’ll keep walking by them.

They are very good IMHO. I won't walk by one without checking it out

If there fresh they are pretty good, otherwise yucky. I slice then spray with oil, then dip in flour, salt, pepper, and lots of garlic powder, fry in butter.

No batter, just dredge in flour

were like trying to batter rubber. Could never get batter to adhere well.

The few I have found, I have crumbled and fried.

They were pretty good, but i do prefer chanterelles.

If you're looking for something close to morels, learn to find chanterelles. I swear I couldn't tell the difference!

I dehydrate puffballs and grind into a dust. I will add that dust to soups, sauces, gravy, etc.

To me, they're kind of bland when cooked like other mushrooms.

Never noticed a similarity between morels and chants. Oysters are about identical in taste though, at least to me. Maybe even a little better.

They take on the flavor of whatever you cook them in. Meaning that yes, they are bland.

Trumpets are made for dehydrating. They reconstitute well

I must've got a fresh one to then. It smelled very mushroomy when I picked and definitely had that flavor after cooking it. All I used was butter salt and pepper. No flour or batter. I thought it was very good. I had oyster mushrooms once and they were good. I wonder if they change flavor as they get bigger.

I love em.Cousin called me one day and asked if I wanted a couple he picked.I said sure, but why don't you eat them.Said I don't like them.I took them and made Puffball Parmesan.Slice about 3/4 inch thick.Bread them and fry. Then,,put them in cassreol dish with spaghetti sauce and bake for about half hour on like 350%.Put some more sauce on top and a bunch of Parmesan and Mozzarella cheese.Bake for another 15 minuites.Brought him over a big platter full and he couldn't believe what he was eating.LOVED it.My bad,,because he hasn't given me another one since then. frown

My dad would slice them about 1/2" thick and fry them in a pan like a pancake. They were OK.

Diane found and cooked a giant puffball back in July. It was excellent fried. I've never seen a giant puffball during the Summer before. There was no mistaking it for anything else.

[Linked Image]

It tasted good enough that I would not hesitate to order it at a restaurant, if I didn't have easy wild access to giant puffballs.
