There's a LOT of technical know how in making springs.

There are a lot of different kinds of ready made springs out there. I know you like to build stuff though.

I know some guys buy raw spring steel wire, build winding jigs, coil their own springs, then temper them.
I don't think it is that difficult. Google around, Youtube, etc., I'm sure you will find something. Maybe not under the heading of trap springs though.

[Linked Image]Here's a couple plain ol' #9 annealed wire springs on a mouse trap.

Spring design ain't exactly rocket science. OK, maybe I did take a unit of it in engineering school; but, it still ain't rocket science. There are only so many different types. most likely you can find some back yard braggart showing what you need on U-tube.

Depending on what you are out to do. Might try google on hay rake springs. It looks along the lines of a coil spring trap spring. For what a person can buy replacements for I can't see it economical though.

Many books dealing with the design of springs. Mechinery's Handbook ( any revised edition ) has a full chapter just dealing with springs, spring materials, and manufacturing and processes. Excellent reference for Engineers and machinists a like. I have had copies since 1970s.

get 1075 steel wire from McMaster carr. heat with a torch (don't overheat or you cause grain growth) and wrap around a steel dowel of the right diameter you want tour cool to be. quench in a fast quench medium. canola oil heated to 120° will work for 1075. at this point it will be super britle and needs to be tempers back to a spring instead of a glass hard piece of steel. I couldn't tell you off hand what temp you need to temper but I'm guessing 500-600°.

I have wrapped springs with out heat. Start using heat and all kinds of problems start. I just built a jig with a mandrel to wrap around. It would be best if a small roller was incorporated into it, as you have to use oil on the little dog if you dont. Then it is just figuring out where to stop, so they come out the same. That is the same method companys use to make springs, they are cold drawn, heat takes the fizz right out of a spring!

Making replacement flat/leaf springs for old jump traps would be handy.

Try that on for size Wolfdog.

If I remember right, after you heat the wire hot enough to wrap around the steel round stock (bright red) and after you quench it in warmed up oil and allow to cool, you then heat the spring until straw color and allow to cool naturally in the air to temper it.

That's what I'm looking at concerning heat , problem is I'm not sure if they would work as well

Those are much like dp springs. Bends are 180* different and space between is different.
Music wire. No heat
just

Take a look at your dp traps. see the similarity?
lots of guys make their own dps and wrap their own springs.

Spring steel formed cold, and not heat treated won't hold shape or strength for long.

big bobs right. a cold formed spring may work but not as well or as long as a properly heat treated one. heat it to the right working temp for the grade of steel your using and bend it to shape, then bring it up to the austenizing temp (1075-1080 steel will be around 1475°f or if your eying it then until a magnet won't stick to it) then quench in a fast oil ( again if your just making do, pre heated canola oil will work) at this point it should be hard enough to skate a file and very britle. so you need to temper it back. iv heard some guys use a lead melting pot cause lead melts at roughly the right temp for a spring temper (iv never used a leadpot to temper in though, i use an oven i built) straw color is to hard, your looking for blue colors for spring temper. industry standards call for heat treating but try doing some cold formed and some heated and tempered maybe for your application cold forming them is good enough and much simpler. for what it's worth I made springs for starter adapters motors for an aviation company so my knowledge on springs is limited to that field.
