$20 - $25 based on experience with equipment provided seems to be a descent wage to me. Also no state income tax in SD.

I think one that applies for this job should look at the political climate or leadership involved with these positions. There could be an underlying reason why 2 jobs are open at the same time, maybe not. I just know a few years ago some experienced guys got tired of the environment and quit.

Cost of living is low in that area, that's a great paying job. Great fishing and hunting as well.

What's the experience worth? How many trapping legends tried their hand or got a start as a government trapper? I'd guess the majority with the exception of the ones that got going during the last fur boom. Money isn't everything to living.

Unless you have a degree in wildlife plus several years experience, your starting wage will be closer to 16-17/hour.

I would be very tempted, but I'm almost ready to retire here in MT. and not sure they would want an old foggie like me.

You will get paid to help ranchers by shooting coyotes from a airplane..... Most people pay to do that activity.

We read post after post of people bad mouthing those who won't take a job for $12 per hour because it does not pay enough or they should work 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet. Here we have a job with roughly twice that pay in a lower cost of living area, outside etc. and most are saying, won't take it as it is a miserably low package. I guess there are a lot us on here with really good jobs or we just like talking the talk.

I wish I was a young man. These opportunities don't come very often.

I don't want to take away from Chris's post but there are a lot of people with good paying jobs on here.

20 to 25 is a good wage and most likely a great wage for that area.

My friends working for Wildlife Services tell me that they have to take the jab by Nov 20 or risk getting terminated.

My Wife has kin over there.
Big draw I see with this is,
living and working in an area with a lot less people.
Surprised these younger bucks are not biting.

Not sure what South Dakota coyotes average ? Or that it would be a deal breaker but I would think that the state government trappers are probably not allowed to sell their own fall and winter fur catches ? Do they just have to turn in or turn over their fur caught rather than selling it themselves to keep from having a conflict of interest ?

I wasnt bashing those who make that much, although im very happy im not having to support a family on 40k with the inflation nowadays. Im bashing the SD state government and theyre notoriously low pay. Our teachers are still dead last in the nation i believe, or close to. The retirement is crap. I think that trapping position should be valued higher is all, especially to have to cover as much area as they have to. Cost of living has definitely went up in the area as well and SD gets their taxes in other ways than income. The job would be awesome, but its worth more pay.

Main target animal is coyotes the State trappers have been allowed to trap non-target species in the past if you want to know for sure send Chris a PM. If I have the 2 positions right the 2 guys retiring are guys that have their time in and then some.

Your biggest concern would be filling his shoes he’s a heck of a trapper. The guy traps in his off time that’s how much he’s into trapping he is, plus he’s a accomplished caller on top of that.

Last I knew they give you everything you need meals (out of town), bullets, traps, vehicle, credit card even stamps you name it, in the slow times you can work on your gear and get paid to do it. You get to work on special projects also testing equipment .

Been a while since I moved out here to trap for them so some things may of changed but the pay rate vs cost of living makes it a good paying job around here.
