Cades cove is usually a good bet. Occasionally one walks through town in Gatlinburg

Occasionally one walks through stores in Gatlinburg like happened earlier this year. Or burgles one as happened to a candy store in town a few years back.

Never, ever turn your back on a national park bear. They have no fear and most are expecting handouts. Don't do that either.

Common and sighting a bear are two different things. Took me almost 15 years to see one on vacatioms to pigeon forge/Gatlinburg to see a bear. First time I found one...darn near walked right into it. Came over a rise and it was 50ft away and gorging on cicadas as it was one of the big 17 year cicada hatches.

Back when my dad was a kid in the 60s there were families of bears in every tourist parking lot waiting to be fed.

Saw one eating trash 25 years ago outside our chalet.

Don't know where he is now.

Best place to see them in Gatlinburg is at the park end of the main drag - go to the right up the mountain in the residential areas. You’ll see them walking around the yards, checking trash cans, etc. See some every time we go thru there.
