Going in Friday to try and get my ticker shocked back into rhythm, anyone have it done! Did it work And for how long? They are hoping to get it back into rhythm so they can do an ablation to correct my Heart issues. They said it works about 70 percent of the time.

Had three, none worked for long.
Took Multaq (a medicine) for a while, but that stopped working too.
I'm trying to decide whether to have an ablation.

Never needed a cardioversion because my a-fib was intermittent and would start and stop on its on. Was on Tikosyn for about 7 years and it definitely reduced the frequency and severity of the episodes of a-fib but it was not a cure. In July 2014, I decided to have an ablation to fix the problem rather than continue to try to manage symptoms. It was one of the best health decisions I have made. I am 7 years post ablation and my heart rhythm has remained normal since the procedure. I am off the medication and do not need the blood thinner either. They are hoping to get it back into rhythm so they can do an ablation to correct my Heart issues. They said it works about 70 percent of the time. Do you have irregular heartbeat? I had an atrial flutter which involved my right atrium. I knew of a person who had the same problem. He had his heart shocked and normal rhythm returned. But, it only lasted about 6 months and the flutter returned. I was told an ablation was much more successful than the shocking of the heart. It was about 95% permanent. So, I went for the ablation. That was several years ago and so far the flutter hasn't returned. However, I do have AFIB which is irregular heartbeat and involves the left atrium. They can do an ablation for that, but there's a more than 50% chance it will return. Plus, the ablation in the left atrium is a more involved procedure.

According to the cardiologist I see, if your irregular heartbeat is a flutter involving your right atrium, an ablation will be almost 100% effective for the rest of your life. If you have afib and the ablation would be involving your left atrium, there's a better than 50% chance it will return. You should check with your cardiologist who should refer you to an electrophysiologist who would be the physician to do the ablation for their opinion in your case.

There are some folks on Tman who have mentioned in the past about having an ablation and how glad they were they had it done. I'm one of those. I stressed about it for a long time before I actually did it. It went very smoothly. I had it done at 7:00AM and went home the same day at 1:00PM. I went back to work the next day. I was told not to do anything strenuous for the next 10 days. It is truly amazing what they can do these days.
