Going in Friday to try and get my ticker shocked back into rhythm, anyone have it done! Did it work
And for how long? They are hoping to get it back into rhythm so they can do an ablation to correct my
Heart issues. They said it works about 70 percent of the time.

I did the same scenario. Cardioversion worked immediately but my problem required a pacemaker. I later had an ablation which worked for awhile but then my system found a workaround. I'm on my 2nd pacemaker/defibrillator and still kicking. Good luck in you situation. The things they can do today are amazing.

Thanks, hopefully I can skip the pacemaker, do you still have to take medication?

Had three, none worked for long.

Took Multaq (a medicine) for a while, but that stopped working too.

I'm trying to decide whether to have an ablation.

I've been cardioverted 20 times over the last 35 years. I'm 52 now. I've always get converted right away now. If you wait you run the risk of having a stroke. I am unable to get an ablation due to my extra pathway is on my pulmonary artery. I was on a medication for about 2 months. Never again, side effects were not worth it. Slept 18 hours a day and gained 30 pounds.

Have had 3 heart surgeries (since 1976 mechanical valves) and last one in 2000 had a defibrilator put in too. Also pretty much in a-fib for years. Was scheduled for one to put back into rythym but defibrilator zapped me and it put it back in rythym itself. Went into a-fib later and had a cardioversion done and worked but basicaly for only a few weeks. Since then was put on Tikosyn and it pretty much keeps me in rythym. Pfizer manufactures Tikosyn and I had been getting it for free due to income straight from Pfizer but they stopped that after a few years (is pretty expensive). Switched to Amiodorone and works the asme as Tikosyn BUT has numerous numerous organs in the body it can effect so need bi-yearly blood tests.
So oblation didn't work for me (guess there's 2 types) but medication has.

I had mine put in rhythm at 29. (zapped) then the last 3 times they gave me flecainide and it went back in rhythm right away. They want me to get a cardioversion done but the technology has come so far in 20 years and my heart has been good for 6 years now but someday I will have one done. I am 51 and it runs on my mother side of the family.

Never needed a cardioversion because my a-fib was intermittent and would start and stop on its on. Was on Tikosyn for about 7 years and it definitely reduced the frequency and severity of the episodes of a-fib but it was not a cure. In July 2014, I decided to have an ablation to fix the problem rather than continue to try to manage symptoms. It was one of the best health decisions I have made. I am 7 years post ablation and my heart rhythm has remained normal since the procedure. I am off the medication and do not need the blood thinner either.

Do you have irregular heartbeat?

I had an atrial flutter which involved my right atrium. I knew of a person who had the same problem. He had his heart shocked and normal rhythm returned. But, it only lasted about 6 months and the flutter returned. I was told an ablation was much more successful than the shocking of the heart. It was about 95% permanent. So, I went for the ablation. That was several years ago and so far the flutter hasn't returned. However, I do have AFIB which is irregular heartbeat and involves the left atrium. They can do an ablation for that, but there's a more than 50% chance it will return. Plus, the ablation in the left atrium is a more involved procedure.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

According to the cardiologist I see, if your irregular heartbeat is a flutter involving your right atrium, an ablation will be almost 100% effective for the rest of your life. If you have afib and the ablation would be involving your left atrium, there's a better than 50% chance it will return. You should check with your cardiologist who should refer you to an electrophysiologist who would be the physician to do the ablation for their opinion in your case.

There are some folks on Tman who have mentioned in the past about having an ablation and how glad they were they had it done. I'm one of those. I stressed about it for a long time before I actually did it. It went very smoothly. I had it done at 7:00AM and went home the same day at 1:00PM. I went back to work the next day. I was told not to do anything strenuous for the next 10 days. It is truly amazing what they can do these days.

Good to hear it went well. Thanks guys! According to my cardiologist they need to get it
Back into rhythm in order to do the ablation!
