Used lots of cole shale or cole slack. Its not all the same, you need to test it by putting water on top if the water doesn't soak in in about 5 min u should be ok. I've never used waxed dirt so I can't compare, as long as you don't have standing water or wet snow freeze over your set you should be good.

If you don't have cole shale in your region waxed dirt is probably more cost eficiant.

You can make 5 gallons of waxed sand for somewhere around 3-4 dollars plus your time.

I use and like coal shale a lot, but I would never pay 45 bucks for 5 gallons. It is good stuff, but wax dirt will take moisture/freezing better in my opinion but it’s a pain to make or buy and you have to worry about odors more with it than shale.

Needs to be the right coal shale, the stuff you guys have is great. What we have around here is garbage for trapping. Some guys use the cinders that the county road departments use.
