An ugly wife that is easy to please that makes a 6 figure income would go a long way in being able to allow you to trap full time. ^ this^

So, how does a guy, in this day and age, make it fur trapping? Yes, fur prices are low but what does a person really “need”. If a job didn’t “get in the way”, could a person do it? Of course this is hypothetical. What are your thoughts? It wasnt that long ago, a person could do it!! sadly those days are long gone, died with the market crash Find a job which allows you time and $ to pursue your real passions. Thats the secret IMO. Some good advice above

Why not get a job that doesn't get in the way? Get a job in concrete construction, roofing, home building, road construction, landscaping, self employed Make 60-100k working from April through November, then trap, hunt and ice fish Or find a job that has hours that allows you to trap, manufacturing jobs often start at 5-6am and finish at 1:30-2:30. Usually enough time after the shift to check traps in the daylight. Just a thought this!

Of course you can use trapping as an income source to support your lifestyle. Whether you meet your fiscal needs by selling fur of course depends on that lifestyle. Trapping is still an important cash producer to people who live a subsistence lifestyle.

Only way you could do it is if you…. 1….Trap in Alaska were there is fur bearing animals that still sale for good money. Wolf , wolverine , lynx , Marten. Then do other things in the off season 2…. In the lower 48 states trap in Utah or Nevada or maybe North Dakota were high population of coyote and bobcats. You would have to catch 1000 coyotes that average 50.00 each to make it. Or maybe 500 and do other work in off season. 3…. Trap during the season in examples 1 and 2 then pick up and move to a state were you could do predator control work for a state and area that you would not be trapping during the fur season. 4…. Government trapper all year long and be able to keep furs and all byproducts from the animals you catch 12 months out of the year. Just my thoughts. MD

If I was on my own I could easily live on $10,000 a year. I could make that pretty easy from fur alone, including the added value. I would have to give up a lot of my "stuff" and my current home to do it.
The current buisness buzzword for that is "Downsizing".

Western cats and fuel efficient transportation like Subaru Brat. 130 cats would gross you 35,000 you could live fairly well in some of the tiny western towns for that. Work 330 days a year scouting bait making equipment maintenance laying out your line just like a regular job. Be a lot harder than when Mel Hershburg and Ray Milligan did it with Arizona out of the picture on public land. But they weren’t settling for $35,000, closer to $65,000. Same price cats though 3~325. 300 miles with moving the line every 2~3 weeks never ending burn&turn till seasons end then to the sales rest up through March then start all over again.

Lot of variables here, fur or nuisance trapping,or both? What's your current financial status?Do you have a family or are you single? If your married,is your wife part of this? What's your standard of living? Are you willing to move to a different state?Do you expect your trapping to pay your bills for 2 months,6 months or 12?
