Hey all,

Looking to take my wife on a fishing vacation to either North or South Carolina, maybe both. This would be second week of March next year. Any suggestions on near shore and off shore opportunities? Boat suggestions? We have gone for Yellowfin Tuna and Redfish out of Louisiana a couple of times and loved it, but time to try something different. We will also have a few days for sight seeing, what are your suggestions? Driving from Wisconsin.

Thanks in advance for all replies!

Doug

Either way you can't go wrong. If you want more inshore stuff I would recommend South Carolina, specifically the Charleston area. If you are looking for gulf stream type fishing the outer banks of NC are the way to go. I have spent a lot of time fishing out of Morehead City and its a short run to the gulf from there. If you want to catch king mackerel, dolphin, cobia, tuna, etc Morehead or the Outer Banks are the place to be. There are also lots of opportunities for flounder but the season is short and you will not be able to keep them. If you are after reds SC is the place to go out of the two Carolinas.

As far as sight seeing goes the Outer Banks aren't going to be comparable to Charleston. Charleston has all the things you would ever want to see, but it can be crowded. The Outer Banks aren't a "touristy" type of deal so you aren't going to be overrun with people. There are still things to see, and a lot of people isn't one of them. That's why I like the Outer Banks!

Thanks. I want to do both inshore and offshore, but I am not stuck on a specific species of fish. Variety is good! Just want to experience different things while we still can. We may have time for inshore in South Carolina and offshore in North Carolina.

we liked Edisto Island SC about 75 minutes out of Charleston so you can go take in the sights there , lots of beach access points at the end of every street you could walk to the beach

flowers sea food great place to pick up stuff there is a state park boat ramp on the Edisto river and in March should be fairly quite , we went in early November everyone was bundled up it was 65 and sunny we were swimming water was still 80 and I was standing in the surf fishing locals thought we were nuts , we came from 35 and rain.

crab traps would be nice

I had little kids at the time , it has been a few years so we canoes the river and out into the ocean not real far about a mile

I am not much help on fishing charters although there definitely were some I didn't try any

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I don't remember if the lake was in North our South but when I was in field service there was a lake that had massive sunfish. Guy that I worked with was a member out there. Never caught gills that fought that hard or caught so many bigger than a paper plate. We had a blast. Not sure what the fee is.

I wouldn't get too excited about fishing saltwater in March. Santee Cooper in March, that's a whole nother story. 100# blue cats, 40# flatheads, bass everywhere. March is good for that.
I don't know what's going on in the gulf stream in March.

Too far North for that time of year? We fished Louisiana a couple times in March and we did well both times.

March at the Outer Banks should produce some tuna. Blackfin and Yellowfin are here then. A little early for mahi but possible. Expect wind.

Gaston lake has exceptional blue cat fishing with live bait. Cats in the 100-120lb range are possible. The lake holds crappie and bass as well.

You may be able to fish for large bluefin tuna in March. Oregon Inlet and Morehead City have a few boat that can take you.

Not sure what will be inshore. Too early for cobra. Red drum have been good for several years. Stripe bass should be in the sounds but they are catch and release in March.

A bottom fishing. charter out of Hatteras can produce a lot of good eating fish to take home.

You just never know what weather to expect in March. It could be cold or warm. Sunny or rain and wind. Violent weather is a remote possibility.

I lived on the Outer Banks for 15 years, and was there on weekends as a Coast Guard Reservist for about 20 years. I dabbled a little in commercial fishing and seafood processing for 5 years in Hatteras. Cleaned lots of fish for the charter fleet at Odens Dock in Hatteras.

I lived in Charleston for about 35 years, loaded with things to do, and great fishing. Contact Robert Olsen at Knot@Work fishing charters. He does inshore and offshore charters. Check his Facebook page, he is an outstanding charter captain, and loads of fun.

Thank you Owen, I will look him up. Hopefully he has a website, I don't do Facebook.
