I have about a quart of beaver tail oil that I have drawn off a couple gallon jars from last season. What kind of response can I expect from coyotes, fox, bobcats and other non target animals? I have made a dirt hole (1" diameter hole 12" deep) in a well used area with a trail camera to see what response I get but wanted to see what everyone else has experienced. Also I'm using straight BTO with no other additives. I will update as I get results from the camera.

Don't waste your time testing like that....
3 steps to testing a lure, bait, or ingredient
Step 1; give it to a newbie trapper, they can tell how good it is by smelling it (don't believe me?? Watch YouTube)
Step 2; ask if it's good on a social forum (guaranteed to get 75% positive response no matter what it is)
Step 3: and this is the most important one. Set on your couch and think about it. If it seems like it's a good idea, it's bound to be great because confidence is everything and a coyote isn't attracted to it unless he knows you have positive feelings about it.

Remember it only has to catch 4 or 5 critters a year to be great.

Ps since your pretty new here I'll throw you a little tidbit..... you want to kill a thread fast on this forum just bring up testing in your OP. cool

Just to be clear this wisdom isn't directed at you. I applaud you for wanting to find out what the animals response is to it. I believe it is the most important and funnest part of lure making. You will by all means get out of it more than you put into it but it does require some effort.

Yes sir. I know where your coming from and don't let a few bad apples ruin it for you. there are more people who appreciate your insight than you know.

You doing the right thing to find the response . Normally that hole will get BIG, with some droppings in the vicinity. Place a clump of grass close to that hole and see what happens.

I just love setting out trail cams, and then testing bait, and lure. Sometimes it causes more questions and confusion, and you can forget about the KISS principle. I'm glad I have a good friend on here that keeps me straight, and is always answering my question, no matter how far fetched the question is.

He keeps reminding me of the KISS principle and pulls me back to what I know, and not what I believe I want to know.

I put some BTO out in a dirt hole last week on 10/03 Fox dug the hole up 4 days later and possum tracks 2 days later. I don't have any trail cams but I make a smoothed out area of dirt about 18 inches in diameter then broom it flat. Without too much rain I can decipher tracks for quite a while. I usually check every other day

Well after a couple weeks of testing and location changes, coyotes coons deer all seem very intrigued by the smell. Coyotes and coons have dug up every bait hole I've made. I think it will become a lure I use fairly regularly especially when used in conjunction with spoonbill oil.

I used a piece of tail down a dirt hole last week and got back hair , don't know if this was a fluke or not .

Not a fluke. Alot of great attractants will get a rolling response. Need to adjust your sets to catch them while they are checking it out and before they roll. Also you can use smaller amount. More smell more intense and quicker the rolling.
