I was travelling to our hunt camp , on the weekend. Road pavement was almost new, Driving about 110 kmh , 2007 3/4 ton Dodge truck. All of a sudden developed a violent shimmy in front end . Wanted to pull to the right. Got slowed down a bit and it stopped the shimmy. Mot a happy thing to have happen. Continued on but reduced speed to 90 kmh..Have nearly new tires.

I took to garage where I get truck serviced. . He said you had a Dodge death wobble, has had it happen to him. He is going to do repair monday, likely replace a linkage bar and check over. Has anyone seen this happen , or any mechanics know the answer

Certainly gets your attention in a hurry. old243

Used to happen all the time on the railroad trucks when on the road/highway.-F 350's.Wheels were 20 inch narrow tires with 90lb air,and narrowed down to ride on the rail.
They fixed them all by installing a shock on the front sway bar.

I experienced death wobble on my 88 one ton Silverado crew cab .

It's a straight axle , Dana 60 , usually it's the king pin springs and bushings on a straight axle . I hadn't had the truck long and it scared the heck out of me. Had an alignment done , a new stabilizer , new shocks , and rotated the tires .

Yeah , you feel like you're gonna die eek

Had it happen back when I was 16 on a late 1960's 2wd Dodge truck. If I'd been going any faster than about 30mph it would of been really bad.

its a combination of wear in the front end, probably not any 1 thing, in my 03 3500 it was slop in the steering box, wear in the tierods, the steering stabilizer, and tires. mine shook so bad it cracked the steering gear box!

Yes, I have a 2015 f250 and it happened to me twice in the last month. I replaced the shocks yesterday. Maybe that will help some as 3 of them were busted.

We are seeing it a lot in our 2017- 2019 Ford F-350 work trucks. It is scary when it happens at 70mph.

Ford specifically addressed the tire pressure issue in a TSB about death wobble, they say too-high tire pressure can contribute to the issue. We see it on state patrol trucks in my shop with the tires at 100psi. We bring them done to 75, and it goes away.

The Chevy express box truck I used to drive at work would get this occasionally. Usually right after hitting a bump. Can't remember what all they ended replacing but it still never was right. Would still shimmy a little bit occasionally. Finally after the third time the transmission went out of it, they got rid of it.

Ram front end components are notorious for failure since early 2000s.
Wheel bearing, linkages, upper and lower control arms....
Doesn't matter which one you buy anymore they all have different but comparable cost failures of important components.

Just happy to be here.

They are designed to fail. If they dont you wont buy as many new vehicles. After market parts are often much better than factory when you do repairs. "Death wobble" should be an easy diagnosis. Check shocks first. If you push down on your fender and release the vehicle should not keep bouncing up and down. It should come back up and stop. Check ball joints. Check tie rod ends, Check stabilizer bar bushings. Check CVC. Check u joints. Check bearings.

My 2003 Jeep Wrangler would get a bad wobble especially at slanted bridge to roadway transitions. Never had it in my 2007 2500 RAM, but had the front end rebuilt in 2019. Pretty much everything was shot (upper and lower ball joints and tie rod ends). One wheel bearing was bad too so both got replaced. Mileage at the time was 160K or so.

i have a 2005 Dodge Dakota. I have had the death wobble many times. Took it into a Dodge dealer. He said that the front wheel was locked up and was only turning because of the speed. Have had the brakes replaced a number of times. If you only drive a short distance you don't experience it. Only when I drove over 12 miles did it start.

I'd take it to a good front end man, he will shake down the front end, replace anything worn, and get it aligned right. Back in the day of straight axles and king pins I was told if an axle was not rotated back at the top a little bit you could get a bad wobble.
Same thing if the toe wasn't set because both front tires were trying
to steer you a different direction at the same time.

Can be a bad brake line hose. If a tire is out of balance and on the front end this can cause it as well. Short rides it doesn’t do it but on longer rides it does points it more in the direction of a slightly off balanced tire. On the short rides the tire may stay cool enough to where the slight unbalance doesn’t effect it. Longer rides the tire heats up causing the slight unbalanced to become more unbalanced triggering the death wobble. Also applies for bad brake line hose. Short distance rubber on inside of hose is hard and cool after a while of driving rubber heats up and closes shut if damage on the inside. Acts like a one way breather valve fluid pressure builds and brakes begin to stay in gaged. Just some issues I’ve ran into on all jeep and dodge models. Other then the normal worn out front end components.

My old Jeep Wrangler will do that sometimes it feels like it’s trying to “walk” always seemed like the tires were fighting each other. I just cut a tight circle to off set the tires a bit and moved on.

You know it's about to happen when you get out and check wheel hubs. The problem ones are warm to hot, brakes locking up. For some reason it won't release the rotor.

rotated back = caster

camber castor and toe

camber front view / \ the wheels tip in or out

caster / \ side view

toe in top view / \

toe out top view \ /

caster like the caster on the front of a shopping cart push fast and they wabble

the invers of too much caster is a Chopper motorcycle try turning one at speed you can't you have to lean to turn

you can also create the issue with to much load or a truck adjusted for load having none

but worn alignment components are the most common issue

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
