Finally decided to get the pre exposure rabies vaccine. Just wondering on side effects you guys that gotten it have experienced. There is a long list online but it seems like most everything online is intended for post exposure.

Keep it to side effects experienced only, and it will stay.

LOL, thanks. Didn't read it thoroughly, jumped the gun, since it seems to be the hot topic.

I had the pre-exposure rabies shots maybe 40 some years ago and never experienced any side effects.

I got the pre exposure and never noticed any side effects.

Worked with a guy that got the post and he had several side effects. A dragging left leg showed up within a week. Last I knew a month later he still had it but was improving but slowly. I don't remember the other side effects now as was several years ago. He was bit by a rabid bat.

How important is it to get this vaccination? I trap for a 4 to 6 weeks in December/January. I wear gloves.

I am glad this came up. I've been wondering.

If you deal with bats ands skunks, it's probably a good idea to get the pre exposure. Even moreso in areas with frequent rabies cases reported in animals.

If rabies is prevalent or an outbreak is happening, and you handle live wild animals(cages, footholds etc) on a regular basis it would likely be prudent to get the rabies pre exposure shot.

I don't think you need to get it Blaine, you'll be fine. Rabies isn't that serious of a virus.

I went for a lot of years not getting the shot. But I accidently poked myself with a syringe needle I had been using on skunks this last spring. I wasn't worried about rabies transmission but wanted to let the physician know it happened in case of other disease possibilities. They wanted to go ahead and treat me as possible post expose just to be safe. It was a series of 4 rabies shot in the arm. Day 0, 3, 7, and 14. No side effects after the first three shots but after the fourth I got a really bad headache and body aches for a day. This was the post exposure so the pre exposure you probably won't notice much of anything would be my guess.

Depending on where you live and the critters you handle, rabies may not be that prevalent so the pre-exposure series may not be much advantage.

But the second part of the above quote in bold could not be further from the truth. Rabies is deadly serious! Untreated exposure results in death almost 100% of the time. There are only one or two documented cases of humans who survived rabies and they were still alive but were no longer functional human beings.

I had the pre-exposure series and had no noticeable side effects. It was a series of 4 shots in the arm spaced out over a few weeks.

My wife had the pre-exposure shots many years ago and had zero side effects.

Got post exposure--no side effects. Tested antibodies and had none. So, I got a booster shot. No side effects

Does insurance cover pre-exposure?
