I think the Confederate flag is being turned into a symbol of division of the races, which it originally wasn't. I don't think it should be banned, even though I would never fly one.

Things were a lot less black and white during the Civil War than many people believe now. Free and enslaved black people fought on both sides. Some of the heroes for the South were actually black. Free blacks in the South were more likely to own black slaves than white people. Quite a few black people support the Confederate flag.

Everything is being turned into something to divide people..being a white conservative is evil because we are the people who will stand up to what they plan to do.

I'm of mixed opinion.

One, the battle flag to me honors my forebearers who to a man fought for their family and home. Not slavery, not the government in Richmond, not the ruling planter class, not even as some sort of protest against northern political tyranny and taxation. But to stand up and defend their homes and loved ones.

That should be honored by flying the flag proudly in honor.

Two, miscreants have abused the the memory of my forebearers by using the flag to defend the indefensible and shameful practices.

Three, the flag to me is my home, my sense of place, my heritage within the south as a proud native born son of Alabama.

Four, the flag has been weaponized not by unionists or even those who may misunderstand one and three but by those who would destroy all of recorded history for their evil purposes.

So do I fly the flag? Not at present as I choose not to sully it's honor as so many have done. Will I fly it? Absolutely, with all the respect and honor it deserves.

When the time comes I will proudly follow the battle flag.

A local restaurant-bar in my area has a real redneck patriot owner. He had the Confederate along with the stars & stripes displayed in his place. The local United Way insisted that he take it down. He said he had a right to keep it if he chose to. They made a big stink about it and filed a number of complaints and continued to harass him. Even managed to get him shut down for a while while things were ironed out. He finally had enough. He filed a lawsuit against the women pushing this and the United Way.

I was told he won an undisclosed amount. I stopped giving to the United Way after that as did some of my friends.

To some the confederate flag is a symbol of Christianity, and the rainbow is God's sign of never flooding the world again. O ya , I guess gay used to mean happy.

The largest ethnic group in the south was the Scots Highlanders, Lowlanders and the Ulster Scots.

Heck, my own McLeod's Beat in Clarke county Alabama was known as little Scotland and gaelic was still spoken at the time of the war. To this day the majority of the surnames in the county are Scottish.

Most people that fly it are expressing a pride in the south and nothing more. I don't have a problem with that. Some people find it offensive, and I understand that too. I have a neighbor down south that flys it but I don't think he has a racist bone in his body. I choose not to fly it, partially because I'm really just a Yankee wannabe. But I have to confess, I sure do like southern culture. The old southern culture. Can't beat it.

I admit to bias when I see one of those flags. I tend to think that the owner is probably one of those boneheads who think their own ignorance is just as good as someone else's knowledge. (But ignorance is never as good as knowledge.) Somebody who doesn't care who he may hurt or offend. Not somebody I'd likely be able to have an intelligent discussion with, without him trying to pound me into the ground.

That's my own bias, as I said. I'm working on trying to stamp out my biases, but sometimes it's a struggle.

I have one in my shop. It's the same one I had in college. It was fine to fly it then and I'm not getting rid of it. A large US flag flies in front of my house.

I am not a southerner but I did watch the Dukes of Hazzard as a kid. I wanted a 1969 orange Dodge Charger and the flag is all I got.

But if Americans ever actually concentrated about there complete history and not just the parts that they want to complain about they would never get anything done. Every country has its historical wrongs.
There is no reason that the Confederate flag can not be reinvented as a symbol of change in the south and a brighter future of cooperation. But that would give people one less thing to be upset about.

For me, its a little bit of a conundrum. As ya'll know, I am a Kraut but live in east Tennessee. I was in the German forces way back when Jesus was a cowboy, " defending" the west from the evil communist forces .... or so i was told. ...... Now those very communist forces are trying to run the government of the country that I live in, that used to be a member of the NATO pact but is now giving away weapons to terrorist organizations.
That leads me to the only logical conclusion for me. ..... Protect me and my family from anyone or anything that is trying to infringe on our freedom.

The part NPH read was all about how the king sided with the savages against the Colonists and how terrible the savages (that's the word used in the American Constitution, not mine. Under that definition I'm a Savage. Plus probably only a few Indians spoke English so they did not care. I'm certain they had names for the Colonists also) were.
