I think the Confederate flag is being turned into a symbol of division of the races, which it originally wasn't. I don't think it should be banned, even though I would never fly one.

Things were a lot less black and white during the Civil War than many people believe now. Free and enslaved black people fought on both sides. Some of the heroes for the South were actually black. Free blacks in the South were more likely to own black slaves than white people. Quite a few black people support the Confederate flag.

Everything is being turned into something to divide people..being a white conservative is evil because we are the people who will stand up to what they plan to do.

I'm of mixed opinion.

One, the battle flag to me honors my forebearers who to a man fought for their family and home. Not slavery, not the government in Richmond, not the ruling planter class, not even as some sort of protest against northern political tyranny and taxation. But to stand up and defend their homes and loved ones.

That should be honored by flying the flag proudly in honor.

Two, miscreants have abused the the memory of my forebearers by using the flag to defend the indefensible and shameful practices.

Three, the flag to me is my home, my sense of place, my heritage within the south as a proud native born son of Alabama.

Four, the flag has been weaponized not by unionists or even those who may misunderstand one and three but by those who would destroy all of recorded history for their evil purposes.

So do I fly the flag? Not at present as I choose not to sully it's honor as so many have done. Will I fly it? Absolutely, with all the respect and honor it deserves.

When the time comes I will proudly follow the battle flag.
