Does insurance cover pre-exposure? I imagine it depends on your insurance. Mine covered post, but some on here have said, in the past, theirs wouldn't.

Rabies is common in western Alaska, however I've never heard of anyone ever contracting it. They must have skinned out hundreds if not thousands of rabid foxes out that way over the last 60 years or so, mostly by guys not wearing gloves, and most likely by guys with cuts on their hands. Just seems like there would have been more that a few cases of human rabies in the area. Just wondering.

I don't think you need to get it Blaine, you'll be fine. Rabies isn't that serious of a virus. Depending on where you live and the critters you handle, rabies may not be that prevalent so the pre-exposure series may not be much advantage. But the second part of the above quote in bold could not be further from the truth. Rabies is deadly serious! Untreated exposure results in death almost 100% of the time. There are only one or two documented cases of humans who survived rabies and they were still alive but were no longer functional human beings. I had the pre-exposure series and had no noticeable side effects. It was a series of 4 shots in the arm spaced out over a few weeks. I kind of think his post was sarcasm, but if it was it wasn't very good sarcasm trying to equate a disease with 100% fatality rate to one with less than 2% fatality rate.

I have natural immunity. Was with a rabid girlfriend for 4 years.
I'm pretty sure it's lifelong as I don't make those mistakes anymore.

My wife got bit when she picked up a stray, feral cat that showed up at our place. She ended up with rabies shots. Not fun. I always hear about them being injected in the stomach. She got all hers in the hinder, one every day for about a week.

Does insurance cover pre-exposure? VA will if you can prove a need.

You will probably need boosters later based on your titer counts. I've heard that titers counts can remain high for quite some time though. And you will need the hemoglobin shots post exposure if an exposure occurs. Misunderstanding is one of the givens with rabies. I am sure the above was posted with the best of intentions but it is not accurate information. If you are exposed, either know or suspected, and you have not had the pre-exposure series, you get the human hemoglobin treatment and the full series of vaccine on a set schedule. If you are exposed, either know or suspected, and you have had the pre-exposure series, you do not get the human hemoglobin treatment. You only get two rabies vaccine booster shots. The following is a link to the CDC Guidelines that describes the treatment protocols for Post Exposure for folks who have not had and who have had the pre-exposure vaccine. It spells out the treatment needed in both cases. It is the best explanation I have found. Post Exposure Treatment for Rabies Without Prior Vaccine and With Prior Vaccine

I do not remember the amounts but my insurance did cover a portion of the cost for the pre exposure vaccine series. If I recall correctly, the coverage was around 50% of the cost in my case.

Does insurance cover pre-exposure? VA will if you can prove a need. Don't have to PROVE anything, just tell your primary care Dr you handle wild animals and "NEED" it. If they give you any crap, go see the VET REP and/or Patients Advocate. They claim it's expensive, I don't know how much, but if the Gov whizzes away trillions of dollars for illegals, they can spend a few bucks on a Veteran. The Titer check is also supposed to be spendy, and is done on a "Cost Basis" meaning they have to send it out to a lab.

I knew you got one and not the other I remembered it wrong on which one. The point I was attempting to make was that pre exposure doesn't mean set for life ignore all bites. You still need to seek treatment if bit and need to monitor your immunity.

I looked into with my local VA clinic and immediately started getting blank stares and stonewalling, fill out this and and screw it keep your paperwork. I guess I need to bull my way through but I swear they're going to need to sedate me to deal with it as I lack patience and have a short fuse. Oh and what is a primary care doctor? Last one I saw more than once was over twenty years ago.

I believe the cdc recommends a titer test every two years but it looks like different doctors have different recommendations. Looks like a post exposure hemoglobin shot can be over 20 thousand dollars alone. Plus you need up to 6 vaccinations post but only 2 or three pre. That's why pre seems like the way to go. Had a scare after cutting myself skinning skunks two years ago sent three heads to the state but all came back negative thankfully. Just figure its time to quit tempting fate. Its turning into a pain to get answers on if my insurance will cover it they need a procedure code and the doctor didn't know what it was yet. So hopefully tomorrow he or his nurse can tell me. I am getting the shots either way but it'd be nice to know the price before going in.
Yup blank stares is about right. Got the call transferred to the ER twice today as soon as I said rabies lol. Nobody seems to have answers but with a almost always fatal disease I will figure it out.

I’ve had it and boosters. No problem here. It has a good track record since 1885 unlike some others
