ND G&F will refund money for tags for the west third of the state due to EHD. So it is going strong here too.

I went South to cat country to talk to a landowner he was loaded with deer he said his fields are packed when the sun goes down. Here in central SD we are not seeing much for deer.

We got hit hard with it here around 2009-2010 if my memory serves me correctly. Nasty deal. I ran around eight trail cameras during that time frame and had some really nice bucks on camera and it all went poof. That's the last year I actually shot a deer here in Nebraska. I haven't seen anything since that time that really got my wheels spinning. Finally, I am starting to see some nice deer again. I keep telling myself I am going to shoot a couple does this year to eat but time will tell.

It’s sounding a lot worse days. Many dead deer showing up with pheasant season going. Sounds like most western countries and several central and Eastern countries.

Our gfp will just now start to get feedback about where the worst hit areas are now that ditch parrot season is now open. Myself, where I am located have seen no sign. My buddy who guides, found several down south along the river and over towards Platte these past few weeks.

You see more short tailed released birds walking around looking for a feeder then wild ones around here.

I am unfamiliar with EHD. Does anyone have some data on how infectious it is and what is the mortality rate and also does it live in the soil or organic matter for an extended period of time. What might be the most likely means of transmitting from one geographic region to another. There are areas with very high densities that seem not to have issues with EHD
OK I did a quick Google search and found info and copied the link. If others have more detailed info it would be welcomed. Is this disease increasing in occurrence and expanding its range?

I take it those areas had some drought conditions this year.

Its always occurred. If there is an increase in occurrence its due to the large increase in the deer population vs only 30 years ago. Mostly we just hear about it now because of the internet. Its not contagious, its caused by midge bites.

My local deer herd has been wiped out by EHD disease
I think 85-90 % of my deer are dead ...I never saw anything like this before.
The stench of rotting deer carcasses was strong ..

Ehd does not really exist in north or central Wisconsin. I have seen what it can do in areas I hunted in Illinois Iowa and Missouri and it is the worst thing I have every seen. Hardest on the older deer and takes years for the population to rebound.

Wasn’t too hard on them there. Will have to talk to some pheasant hunters when I get there.
