Anyone have a suggestion for a remedy to animals rolling over flat sets even when the lures are in driver holes?

I was taught the traps are in too tight. Canines generally get in and smell closely before they roll in something. They should be on the pans while deciding. This solution has worked for me but others may have better cures.

On wolves, I get rollers when my lure is too loud. Very rarely when I use a subtle lure in dirt holes or flat sets. Too, I certainly agree with Osky's assessment.

Use milder lures. Lure pokeholes, bones or pull sticks placed under edge of low cactus (transplanted if you need). Or use your lures they want to rub on a stump or rock about coyote shoulder high to keep them on their feet while they rub.

Hey ceb7972 youse guys start importin them cactus to eastern Tejas? Might be worth more than the swamp dogs.
You probably got a drip or drop of lure on the edge of the poke hole. As said before milder lure and less

I moved the trap over to get a little distance on it. I did use a loud call there, and it’s about 18 inches from the trap. So, I’ll see if that does anything

Put lure below ground or just catch them in the act. Had a little pup caught by the shoulder hair once. Pulled out when I came up on her.

Fish based lures will often cause rolling.

One of the things I learned from testing lots of lure ingredients is if a coyote REALLY likes something, he's going to want to wear it. The more they want roll on it the more I like it. You just have to know how use it correctly. Several different approaches to catching them before they roll. Lazarus has a good write up on his website about the rolling effects of coyotes if I remember correctly.

All good answers. The too much lure one is what I'd agree most with. Also too loud or strong. The one thing I have found is that most trappers overuse lures very badly. Especially early in the season. Many spend an awful amount of time, getting to where they think the coyote can't smell the trap because they think his nose is so good. Then turn around and use way more lure than needed, thinking he can't smell it. I laugh when I think about it! grin

I’ve been guilty of that for sure Lee. More isn’t always better. Took a few years for that to sink in for me.

I too have tried quite a few lures over my 56 years of trapping.I have been using mostly my own home made baits and lures for 30 years now.Im not fond of baits or lures that almost emediatly entice a rolling response. To each his own.

First of all I was talking ingredients not finished lure or baits. But most of the good ones will get a rolling response from my experience. If u use fish oil, castor, sac oil mink or muskrat glands, or a dozen other common ingredients in your formulation your using ingredients that get a rolling response. If you don't use any of these I promise I won't tell anyone.

This comment probably will help me catch more coyotes. Im a newbie, but i have figured out some stress out too much about keeping traps clean when i believe bedding is more important. Reminds me of that pic of different amounts of lure on toothpicks asking which is the correct amount. Its WAY less than what you see guys on a lot of videos using (guys who often are using the lure they sell). Thanks for the reminder.

The thing about rolling is that with the good ones rolling is not the first first response.

All great responses. As stated above to much lure will cause this behavior. When ask this question in the past I’ve always ask if the questioner if the canine was rolling up to the lure or walking up to it. I ask that because we know he’s walking. Take a long look at your set and adjust your trap placement. Good luck and post a pic when you get him.

I dont believe to much lure causes it. Unless maybe somebody uses a tablespoon full. Which I cant see very many people doing.

The ones I like the coyote will first put his nose right on it or down the hole. Then try to lick it. Then dig or paw at it. Rub on it some then take a leak. You get coyotes doing that it will catch whatever finds it except maybe beaver.
