Weird, why do I keep hearing about Helena? You're the third person this week I heard of who's thinking about moving there.
And it's only Monday.

I see that the housing market is insane...

If you can afford it, I'd recommend it. I'd look for housing around Montana City or out towards Canyon Ferry if it was me. Sadly housing is insane in all Montana cities. Outdoor opportunities abound around there, and it's more conservative than Missoula.

Are wages commensurate with housing prices or do you have to bring your money with you?

I personally don't think wages are at all commensurate with housing prices in Missoula, Bozeman/Belgrade, or Helena areas right now. Frankly I'm not sure how people are affording the current housing markets here, but if someone has a job opportunity lined up that can afford the prices they are seeing then more power to them I suppose.

Well wages would need to be if they expect me to move there....daddy didn't raise any dummies.

$2500 rent for one bedroom apt.

That's just poor money management, if you can afford $2500 a month for rent but can't get into a mortgage... there is no equity in rent.

Its tough to get into a mortgage when every from washington and california beat the average joe to it. My buddy just looked at a 330,000 dollar shack in missoula and some from washington had the audacity to ask him as the were passing by looking at the house, "do you like it here in Missoula?" Guy went on to say how he sold his place in washington for 1mil and he had some money rolling around so he thought he would buy a house in the country.

My wife and i bought our house for 286, 10 over asking, within an hour of it going up for sale 4 years ago. We got a good house in a good spot. I really feel for those looking now. My house currently is going for 460 not including the remodeling I have done.

As far as affording it, rates are low, you just are going to have to lay more down. We refinanced, dropped the rate and are trying to pay it off in under 10 years.

My brother lives in Helena. It is not as liberal as Missoula, must be awesome.

Lived in Belgrade for a year or so, working in Three Forks. Did some work up in Helena too. Beautiful area to live, would like to make it back there one day. When my wife and I lived in Belgrade, we rented a two bedroom duplex for $800/mo. I could look out the window in the morning and watch the sunrise over the Bridger mountain range.

*Note - we moved back to ND after that time because the wife and I nearly ran out of money trying to afford to live there. Granted, she wasn't working at the time either as she was still attending college classes in ND and student-teaching in MT.
