Anybody else see that NY extended deer season in the southern zone? Looks like there is a bow/ muzzleloader season between Christmas and New Years this year. It’s a bummer because most of the properties I trap are after deer season only.

This is just another example of DEC spinning their wheels when it comes to deer management

Another poor decision from NYDEC. They seem to be full of them this year. Shoot during the dark, (1/2 hour before and after sunrise/sunset) but now you have pink or orange on so that's ok. And just ask walleyed what they did to his rat season.

That loss of a week of northern zone rat season was rockwood's call.

Personally don't like it or think it is necessary.. Our season is long enough.. It's not going to help in hunter recruitment or hunter satisfaction. The weather is usually crappy and the deer have been pressured enough and need to be left alone to conserve their body resources for the rest of the winter.. It also Interferes with others trying to enjoy the outdoors, (Skiers, hikers, trappers, small game hunters, snowmobilers etc).. Another bad decision on the DEC's part..

I suspect if you are just learning of this now, you did not comment on the DEC proposal for the
Holiday Hunt" last September...

You can ask your county's legislative body to opt-out of the "holiday hunt."

if it is anything like here in WI we have MLK and the MAD city both delusional and crazy . even if we don't have an Albany or a NYC

the "burbs" have all together too many deer and car collisions are crazy

problem is everyone says not in my backyard and there is no place to hunt those deer no way to reduce those numbers in those areas

so government does what government does best and decides a deer is a deer we will increase the season the harvest ect. to make those complainers happy well not happy maybe pacified that they did "something" while they blame poor harvest in those areas on the hunters who couldn't get any ground in the deer sanctuary they call their back yards any way.

the answer would be deer snaring , special hunts like with dogs to drive the deer from the yards to an area where the could be shot in a near by field , suppressed elevated hunting , but just increasing the quota and season will do little to change deer numbers in a sanctuary where no hunting is allowed

and it makes other parties unhappy

NYS deer season is way too long. Give tags to people that can kill deer instead of the crazy lottery system. Shoot a doe, turn in tag get another doe tag.

Y'all ain't seen long deer seasons until you live in the south. Gun season from Nov. 6th until January 31st.

Thats not dark . Been legal shooting hours in ky for years. It is pretty light out long time before the sun breaks the horizon. Plus still light after it's gone down. Late muzzle loader is during trapping season always ahs been.. In fact deer hunters get one weekend then trapping starts. But furs not prime until after Thanksgiving anyway.
