I wouldn't think the single shot shotgun would be legal since it's not a rifle.

I like the idea of giving people lots of options. They could have said must use a cartridge in use before 1900 or something. Seems odd that 30-30 isn't legal. It doesn't seem like a bad reg to me but it was definitely written by a committee of non shooting lawyers.

I found it odd that you can't use a smokeless muzzle loader but can use a smokeless cartridge gun.

AND you can use anything during primitive season on private land except during the first 2 week primitive season. Basically, having a single shot rifle that qualifies for this rule would let you hunt deer with a rifle 2 weeks before regular season opens.

Yotetrapper, I interpret our laws to exclude break open single shot shotguns as primitive weapon. Hence that 35 whelens and 45-70s have been so popular. The law says "metallic cartridge."
For by grace are you saved by faith, and not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.

Yes I read it to exclude shotguns as well. The following sentence addresses shotguns, but specifies that it must be a muzzle loading shotgun. OR single or double-barreled muzzleloading shotguns, with single ball or slug.

The 350 legend was made for laws like this. only if your shooting it in a single shot rifle with an exposed hammer
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I wouldn't think the single shot shotgun would be legal since it's not a rifle. I would call the warden on that one and ask it is a metallic cartridge as it has a metallic head it sure wouldn't give you any great advantage over say a 45-70 which would be completely legal in a shingle shot with exposed hammer. I think they are mostly trying to avoid people suing 308, 30-06 ect if they just said a >100 year old cartridge and you showed up with your 30-06 it really wouldn't be much of a change from normal

For what it is worth, your hinge-action single shot shotgun with an exposed hammer CANNOT be used unless you have an all metallic cartridge, not just the short brass portion of your shotgun shell...

That is entirely doable. They have made all brass shotgun shells for over a hundred years. They are still being made today, if you can find them. Charlie

It says "rifle". A shotgun, even with a full metallic shell is not a rifle. Agreed it is not any more advantageous than a single shot rifle but that is the way the law is written.
I don't know if they even made them but if you had a single shot shotgun with a riffled barrel you might have an argument that is a rifle.

I looked at that one, but kind of got my mind set on a Henry. I hate scopes and the one above doesn't come with sights. Ain't going to bother for this year since the early season opens in like a week or so, but will think about it for next year.
