In older house been at 15 plus years, there big 6 or 8 inch square timber under joists in mid basement with 3 long round jackposts , adjustable under it, no idea how long there, that hold house up an lot houses like that, heard noise an tremor like earthquake or dynamite but no explosion but felt it in house, like tremor, now thinking it something do with jackposts or big wood timber above it that run lengths house , anyone heard these failing ? Maybe it was at where work at down block ? Felt like tremor, unless something shifted in old carport roof with siding that alongside house like garage , heard noise like that last winter an metal pole go across under roof carport I'm places broke half from weight snow an hit top pickup , so start shovel out snow on flat roof as got lazy for last winter an didn't , I have telescoping snow rake I bought an use ladder an get snow off roof now but can't see that happen now as no snow on flat roof, the metal poles on sides look ok or solid , there rust , I painted them but 4 poles an 1 wood beam , the metal poles in cellar go into concrete, always dry but when rain get in, 1 them get water in it , down in cement, no idea if drys out, rust unknown. Under cement , feels solid

Maybe check out the condition of the joists in the basement that are being held up by the jacks. Is it a house with a basement or is it a house that has a crawlspace? I'd just check for cracked joists or a damaged jackstand. If nothing found, I probably wouldn't worry too much about it - wait for another sound and dig into it again.

The jackstands look an feel ok, the joists are cracked bad but another floor joist that run alongside each one , so dbl joists, felt like dynamite feels like in quarry when half mile away , floor shaking an noise like TNT in quarry but none, unless there use it in tree stumps a few blks away , didn't look until bfore but noone there

Could be methane gas exploding in the septic system. Watch for wet spots in the yard, likely have to replace the whole system. Maybe not though.

One of your coworkers probably read some of your posts and followed you home. They're hiding in there.

It was probably rumbling from the heavy machinery coming to tear up your water and sewer lines.

So the original floor framing are split and sisters on them.
And you didn't know this when you bought it?
I don't believe you, not one bit.

Your house might be sitting on top of a sink hole. The tremors may be a sign it’s unstable.
