I watched a documentary on it 5 years ago. Being from the plains I had never heard of it before. I had never really thought about how dangerous the Great Lakes are. Thumbs up to all that make a living in the shipping industry and bless all those that have lost their lives.

Lightfoot is a great songwriter.A lot of his songs, but not all, are about events historical and contemporary.
I believe Gord spent a lot of time performing in Michigan and other border states early in his careerThe Canadian railroad trilogy, and Black day in July a couple more good ones.
A few of my friends I went to high school with went to work on the Lake freighters. They would return home in winter with lots of interesting stories about the lakes in late fall.

I wonder if he ever got heckled for commenting on American issues because he was Canadian?

Never heard anything in the 6-7 times I've seen him.

Who's complaining? I was just trying to make the point that the Fitzgerald wasn't the only big ship disaster of that era, that some lessons that should have been learned earlier, and that if not for the song, most probably would have never heard of the Fitz, either. Nothing against Lightfoot. I actually like the song.

I still see the Anderson quite often while salmon fishing. I think that's her over my mom's shoulder. I have a bunch of pictures of her, but not any on my phone.

Cool shot there sjc...Again, no complaints, I just have to think of the fortitude it must have taken for those guys on the Anderson, after reaching safe harbour, to go back out into that raging lake...Nice that so many others here know of the Anderson and of that crew....

Not so much jbyrd, more of a failure to secure hatches (although some were unable to be made water-tight)...I believe the Fitz was slowly sinking most of the trip and McSorely never really knew it...IMO it finally "hogged" between two waves and her fate was sealed...A couple of giant waves caught her astern, pushed her bow under and sent her to the bottom...

Of course, to your point of over-loading, the original load-line from 1958 was changed twice over her tenure, so the freeboard went from (I believe) 15 feet to perhaps 11 feet...By 1958 standards, you could look at it as overloaded, but NOT because of the laziness of the crew...

Wasn't implying the crew was lazy! That word doesn't exist in that line of work. That's a term used around here when you carry more than you can handle and you dump the load before you can get to your destination. The term implies that someone didn't want to make more than one trip to move something.

I have always felt a desire to know and feel (if that is the right word) everything that I could about "Big Fitz". When I was very young my family took a tour through the Soo Locks. The Fitz was behind us I believe in the lock in July of 1975 just a few months before the sinking. I remember the sinking every year almost as if it were and anniversary or birth date of a loved one.

Do "iron boats" still run on the lakes?

I kind of figured all that went by the wayside with most of the mills being gone now.

Yes. And the Anderson is still sailing today. Seen it come threw the canal in Duluth last summer. Sure is an awesome sight to see it slide threw the canal. Something worth the trip to see.

I've become acquainted with the family of Oliver Champeau. His daughter lives two miles from where I work.

I play they song on this day in tribute.
