I have meat birds on order. Coming Thanksgiving week. I've been debating raising a hog for 10 years now but never bit the bullet on it. Pork is still relatively cheap here. I don't want to deal with raising a beef, so deer it is. Angela, you can buy a finished hog at auction for far cheaper than you can grow one. You can buy finish weight, cornish/rock chickens at the end of the fairs for 30 to 40 cents an estimated pound and they typically weigh several more pounds than estimated. I bought 1200 some pounds of them back in August for resale. You can get fair turkeys for around 25 cents a pound. Keith

Canned and fresh vegetables and potatoes are still pretty cheap . Add that to beaver meat and you can make some delicious stews. Just use your imagination. I’m sure you could find some places close to you with beaver colonies. That would allow you to trap . Without driving a lot of miles. And provide yourself with some delicious protein.

The lady that paid 500 told my son to keep them. Im guessin you are buying from the auction winners that dont want them?

I saw store brand (HyVee) canned corn and 2 different kinds of green beans for 74 cents last night. Same brand generic "chili beans" for 99 cents.

The fairs take closed or sometimes open bids on everything that is left over. The prices are very cheap. Some small fairs have no competition at all. You can get rabbits, chickens, turkeys, lambs, hogs and goats. It's a very good way to get good quality Boer does for little money. Cull buying at poultry and rabbit shows is another way to get very cheap livestock. Keith

Oddly, we don't have any little fairs around here. Just great big ones a couple hours drive away. That's to bad. I'm not positive, but I believe all 88 counties in Ohio have a fair with livestock for sale,19 smaller communities do and there is the Ohio State Fair for the total of 108 fairs listed. There should be livestock auctions close to you. The prices are typically cheap. Last year they got very, very cheap for a while. Hogs went down to 1 cent a pound, canner cows 25 cents a pond and choice finished beef to 75 cents a pound. Here's a local to me, auctions results from last Monday. "Jackson Livestock Auction, LLC November 8 at 3:48 PM · November 8th Sale Results 31 Hogs Sows 345-585: .6550-.7650 Boars: 455-590 lbs: .13 Butchers: 270-305 lbs: .57-.6250 Feeder Pigs: 50-76 lbs: 51.00-69.00 11 Goats: 35-55 lbs: 65.00-92.50 60-65 lbs: 122.50-160.00 112 lbs: 332.50 160-185 lbs: 265.00-325.00 21 Sheep: 55 lbs-Thin: 1.96 80 lbs-Thin:1.96 70-80 lbs: 2.29-2.38 85-95 lbs: 2.27-2.37 135-137 lbs: 2.16-2.21 Ewes: 165 lbs: .91-1.20 190-195 lbs: 1.25 127 lbs-Hair: 1.09 Cattle: 625 lb Brown Swiss Str: .82 780 lb Yearling Cross breed: .65 1265-1355 brown Swiss: .7250-.73 1275 Hol Str: .88 Cows: 1190-1965 lbs: .59-.7150 Mare: 25 yr old: 390.00" For instance the most a butcher hog could of cost, if it weighed the highest weight sold of 305, was 190.62. It probably sold for $173.85. Prices are up considerably now over a few months ago. If you and Dirt don't want to do the butchering, you can make an appointment with a local butcher for a sale date and drop an animal off or just pay a small fee to a transporter for the auction. You can buy meat this way for a tiny fraction of grocery store prices. Keith

I think you might have meant to post this in the thread you have about kind of people at work but from your last post coonman, it sounds like you're tired of working where you're at (still). There are plenty of jobs around your area. The time is now if you want to change jobs, you have nothing to lose as you have no benefits where you're at now.
However, I'd advise you to cut down the racist, anti gay tone though and that's no matter where you work. Good luck If can get a job where limp, ppl are down on limpers, definately notice much more severe arthritis in knee from year ago, been worn out severe for years but it is very bad doing some trapping for up to 4-5 hrs somedays at most, so plan on try wait till next summer if can an collect soavil security an at least have some income while off work if make it that long, pretty painful lately, especally after home , if knee don't move, get stuff few min an can't stand it, not severe pain but arthritis is different with stiffness, I be done without tile spade to use as cane while walk trap on uneven surface, have not fell on creek but came close today set pocket in deep water in mud sink in bottom with lots grass
