South Louisiana is a little funny that way with classes and categories for folks. Probably goes back to the old French social status of metropolitan (French born) vs native born vs mixed race (further divided by half/quarter/eighth), city (creole) vs country (cajun), slave vs free, etc.. But most of that may have faded with time. But the rest of the south also had it's classes as well.

Cajun is slang for Acadian.
Acadians came from Nova Scotia.Acadia was the part of Nova Scotia where the frenchmen lived. After the English whupped frenchmens arses they booted out all the Acadians.
They were homeless boat people who wound up in Louisianna.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

My grandparents on one side spoke true Cajun French. As far as I know, they didn’t learn English until they went to school where they were forced to learn English. On the other side, my grandfather moved here from Wisconsin in the late 1800s.

In my opinion, what distinguishes Cajun culture is the food and language, with the emphasis being on the food, because much of what people think of is also done by rural people in many places. The food is unlike anything I’ve had anywhere in the country from east coast to west. That’s not to say that there isn’t good food elsewhere, but it’s not this food.

After seeing the scenery from legends of the fall it’s tough to blame anyone for moving out there, the complaints he made makes me think he got tired of stunts pulled by a few. That’s in every state, but not ever rural area.

I dearly love cajun cooking and treasure it's influence on the recipes I learned from mama. Even though she was mountain born southern she grew up on the Florida gulf coast with it's influences from cajun and cuban. I grew up eating a pretty mixed repertoire of upland cornbread pork and greens to cajun seafood and sausage to some cuban and even a little greek via Tarpon Springs.

I am not a Cajun, but due to a speech impediment I have a Cajun accent. When I am in south Louisiana they think I am a native. And I live in south Arkansas about a 100 miles from the border, Does this count?

Old enough to know better, but dumb enough to still try.
