I was looking into a pellet smoker but read where in some situations the dust from the pellets settles on the meat. Also what is in the pellets is it real hardwood or is it plywood ground up with added essential oils and glue? I’m definitely in the market for a good smoker but I haven’t been able to make a decision yet. Plus they’re not exactly cheap ... they’re made of composted hippie manure

About 1/3 the cost of propane or charcoal Pit boss the dust can’t get to the meat or ash First it burns almost completely I’ll cook about 20-30 hours out of a20 lb bag $8:56 at Walmart

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, But Char-griller is a decent side box smoker, and can be used as a grill for steaks, chops, etc. I'm on my third one, mostly because of moves. They are cheap enough it doesn't hurt so bad to leave it behind, about $200. But, they can do the job. Charcoal and wood chunks for heat and smoke, you can do up to 3 brisket at a time, or 4-6 full racks of ribs, depending on how you stack them.
It can hold its temperature very well for about 4 hours without messing with it, the key is to fill the side box with charcoal (ideally in a basket) and dump half a chimney of hot coals on top, closest to the grill top, away from the air inflow. Shut the inflow down to almost full shut and it holds at about 230, rolling smoke as long as you keep wood chunks in it. No cords, no electricity, no pellets to get moldy, caked, stuck, or run out of.

Get yourself a big steel keg, it’s a lump charcoal smoker/ grill and it’s the best Decision I ever made. I Had electric, propane, pellet. NOTHING COMES CLOSE TO REAl WOOD AND CHARCOAL.. I do my own bacon, hams, Fish, pork butts and can grill steaks with it at 800 degrees. Just need lump charcoal and hunks of whatever wood you prefer.

I have an Oklahoma Joe smoker. Mine has the side fire box (which you can smoke on if higher Temps are needed or a quick meal) then in the center is the smoke chamber, and then on the right is a propane grill for simple grilling. I use charcoal and chunk wood on my smoker. I love it. No complaints.
