All packed up just need to stop at The Boys school and drip off his completed work and we are gone for 6 days. I'm more excited for this season than any in a while. Finally have some new blood in camp, one of The Boys friends and his dad, neither has had a hunting camp experience before so it should be alot of fun. Like most deer camps we have been down in numbers, as low as 2 guys some years but with the kids and a couple guys coming back we've been able to recover a bit, this year we have 6, we were planning on 8 but one of the older guys has a massive stroke a month ago and one got called into work this weekend but 6 is the highest we've been in probably 10 years. So I am pumped.

Good luck everybody! Be safe. Aim small, miss small!!!!

Good luck to ball be safe and and as said shoot straight. Kathy is meeting our daughter and grabbing our grandson at 3:00. He doesn't have much for a man in his life and gpa and gma we do a lot of parenting, this will be good to get him in with all of us for 6 days. We are up to 11 of us, three kids, 3 women. The best part is mine and brothers mom still hunts with us. 84 this year as I recall. She shot a dandy buck last year.

I go outside my subdivision on the farm I worked as a kid. Shot my first deer on it and one two weeks ago, a real blessing to own hunting land inside the city limits, bought it as farm land almost 30 years ago. My subdivision is in the background and people tell me to shoot a few extra to help out the flower beds. [Linked Image]

Good luck everyone, I'm blessed to have a camp full of guys. We just got done playing cards and have Escanaba in da Moonlight on and my trail camera was going off all day today. We have 3 years of buck pots up for grabs and I'm hoping to bring home one or two.

Son got a heavy bodied, small racked 6 pointer at 7:02 this AM. I did not see a deer, but am on my way out for the afternoon. Took a couple hours and bought my wife's Christmas present today. My shopping is over for the year.

3 hours this morning and 2.5 tonight and not a deer seen. In between was able to get posts and roof framework up for a shelter around daughter’s outdoor wood boiler.

Quite here. Had a glimpse at one deer through the pines at 150 yards. Sat all day too. Will try a different spot tomorrow and then relocate as the wind changes direction as the snow moves in.

One of our guys shot at an 8 pt but missed, one guy saw a doe and the other 4 guys didn't see a deer, myself included after sitting all day. We're in Langlade County here.

Dane County metro unit here, this was the only deer dad and I saw today. Only heard a few shots. I'm happy to have meat for the freezer.

Deer camp 2021 is all packed up. My dad, uncle, 3 brothers, cousin, and son made up the attendance. Everyone saw deer to shoot except my son. (He got his first buck in the youth season. Don't feel bad for him!) Best camp yet. Good stories and many calories burned dragging deer. Shortest drag was about a mile. Longest was a little over 2 miles. All hunting was done on public ground. No sissies here!

Nice job! Went to school over in MI and wanna get back over there to deer hunt again some day! I would never personally drag a deer two miles since I’ve learned the awesomeness of the gutless method and quality game bags! Once you get used to it and do it a few times it’s super easy. Then again, I don’t have as many friends and family either! Congrats! Happy trapping! ScottW

Just re-read the post and realize it says WI not MI! :-). Either way, good job! Being right next door, a few buddies and I have been talking about invading WI for muzzy season to expand our horizons and hunting opportunities without driving a couple states away like we do for elk! Happy trapping! ScottW

Now that WI allows quartering big game, we have been talking about giving it a go. Might happen next year. I'll have to practice here at home first..

I have liked this cheap full set of game bags I bought. They are on the large side considering I fit whole bone in elk quarters in the largest of them. They don’t have them bells and whistles others have like reflectors and colors, but they keep the bugs out, breathe, and have been tough so far.

In the areas you public land guys in WI are hunting, are you tripping over other hunters so to speak? I hear both sides……some I talk to say not much, others say every ridge I has a hunter. That’s part of the reason we’re thinking muzzy would be nicer.

Happy trapping! ScottW

I shot 2 one late morning and one just minutes before last light Saturday I sitting on the same log for both of them and they were only about 30 yards from where the other had been , good spot . downside a long drag out probably only a 1/4 mile but it sure felt longer being all up hill and over so many rocks and logs there were spots with no fur left on the side it was dragging on.

first time leaving one in the woods over night , but recovered it as soon as I had light and it was fine

I shot it and it wandered off not too fast, I followed it after a little wait thinking the shot I had was good it had gone about 75 yards I jumped it just after last legal light decided it was hurt good but it was too dark to see the blood trail and it looked to be hurt from the way it was moving , I put in a way point at that spot on my gps and knew the log it had gone right next too figuring if I jumped it once more it might go on to the next property . in the morning below freezing over night I walked right to that way point jumped another deer on the way didn't shoot that one knew it wasn't my deer , mine was piled up just 60 yards past the log, I found blood at the log and we followed it. it was probably dead before I had the way point in the GPS but I didn't know that. I thought I was shooting at a big doe turned out to be a big bodied very short rack spike just under legal buck , I had both tags so either would have been fine.

that bullet worked well shame I can't find any more have about 20 left , it hit a little lower than I had intended I have to re check my zero

both deer were taken with the 300 blackout pistol

I harvested an adult doe Sunday AM, so with son and SIL with bucks we have enough venison. We will be taking the heads to the CWD self serve place as all 3 were harvested in a county with recorded CWD positives and they want to test more deer. Last year the buck our SIL shot a bit further from where we hunted tested positive.
My son and I plan to travel north after T-Day for a couple days stalking grouse.

My son shot his best deer ever Saturday morning around 8:15. Shot it with 270 at 85 yards and literally dropped it in it's tracks. I've seen and tracked a lot of deer over the years people have shot. Think this is first one went straight down never even kicked a leaf out of place. He said when he shot it just disappeared. He stayed on his stand and directed me threw the woods to it.
This is considered a big buck for public land in Clark Co and I have to agree. Right place at right time I guess is what it takes.
I seen two does Saturday and four deer on Sunday. Wind was brutal Sunday even had couple tree fall lose enough make a guy jump.

We are far enough in on public land that interactions are minimal. I did have a guy set up 100 yards away from me opening morning. He was mad I was there. I was indifferent. The buck I shot walked right past him while he was sleeping at about 30 yards. The piece we hunt is around 4500 acres of ridges and river. I always tell other hunters that get worked up when we get too close, I'll just be over the ridge if you need help dragging your deer out. Had one guy actually come looking for help when he realized how bad the drag would be. Also in Wisconsin you can only leave the gut pile behind when quartering a deer. Anything else is considered littering. Always figured if we keep the deer together it would be better than packing out bones and hide and legs.

we have found the more people in the cedar swamp the more deer we see you basically can't see past 70 yards in most cases they will easily go around you if you are 1 person

Last line is answer and proposals have been made but not adopted.

CAN I DISPOSE OF MY CARCASS IN THE FIELD? While it is legal to leave a deer carcass in the field of harvest, landfilling is the preferred method of disposal. If landfilling is not available, either directly or through a dedicated dumpster, hunters may obtain landowner permission to dispose of deer carcasses on private property as close to the site of harvest as possible. Anyone using this option should also place the carcass waste in a location where other deer and scavengers are unlikely to encounter it.ARE THERE RESTRICTIONS ON WHERE I CAN MOVE A DEER CARCASS?Yes, because chronic wasting disease can be spread to deer through contact with deer carcasses, deer carcass movement is restricted, especially in CWD-affected areas. Deer harvested in a CWD-affected area may only be transported to another county within the CWD-affected area or a county adjacent to the CWD-affected area. An exception is made if the carcass is being transported to a licensed meat processor or taxidermist. Deer heads may also be transported to any CWD sampling station within the state. See s. NR 10.105 for a full list of exceptions.Deer carcasses are solid waste, and it is illegal to dispose of waste on any public lands or roadways as well as on private property without permission. (Field dressing a deer and leaving the gut pile and associated animal parts onsite on public or private land is permitted.

This is considered a big buck for public land in Clark Co and I have to agree. Right place at right time I guess is what it takes.
I seen two does Saturday and four deer on Sunday. Wind was brutal Sunday even had couple tree fall lose enough make a guy jump.

How does quartering a deer leave any bones behind? Now If you were boning It out that would be different.

Typically a quartered deer would leave behind spine and ribs.

Thanks 330!
My son decided this year he was going to try a neck shot on any deer he got chance to shoot. See how little meat damage he would do. So this deer was shot in the neck which was a first for him. He said it was hit right where he intended. Which was just in front of right front shoulder in the neck. I pulled the hide off it last night so got better look at shot placement. When he field dressed the deer the lungs were scrabbled. Looking at the neck hit in field we couldn't find exit wound. With the hide off I see could see where the bullet exited on left. I won't know until today as we break it down what the actual bullet track was. It really didn't look like it bruise much going in or coming out. He is shoot federal trophy bond which is also new for him. I'm not sure what that bullet hit going where it did? But like said in original post. It literally dropped like rock. Whole front chest cavity was full blood and lungs mush.
Bullet for sure did job with what looks like minimum meat damaged.

Not necessarily. You might just remove the hind quarters to lighten the load and drag out the rest intact. But I see what your getting at.

Of course the rib cage etc will be left behind when quartering 99% of the time. I guess we have some archaic ridiculous laws on the books in some states I was unaware of. If everyone quartered out their deer and left the rib cage in the field at the kill site it would probably help unsightly carcass dumping along country roads! Happy trapping! ScottW

leaving the gut is fine as is parts after quartering the way that it reads , transporting then dumping parts is not

you couldn't even quarter until out number of heart attacks in the woods had well exceeded the total of all hunting accidents year after year

Well we are back to civilization and internet. We had a great week at deer camp in Sawyer County. As a group we saw 87 deer many out of range and some were obviously deer we'd seen the day before but it is nice to have deer to look at. Sure makes sitting a lot less boring especially for the young hunters. We had a couple firsts this year first, one young man a got his first deer on Sunday made a good shot and got a nice 132 lb doe! Then on Monday The Boy got his first buck! I ended up getting a small doe yesterday morning. The Boy sleeps in a stand more than anyone I know lol.

This young man and his father lost their hunting land this year. He is a good friend and team mate of The Boy so I invited them to hunt with us this year. It was awesome listening to the youngins sharing hunt stories when they thought nobody else was listening. They sure can embellish with the best of us lol.

Had a total knee replacement on November 9th. Got a license to shoot from my car. It was pretty uncomfortable in a vehicle all day so brought a stool out Sunday, about 3 feet tall. Was stting watching a deer on the fire lane about 7 on Sunday morning. Probably about 100 yards away. Something made me decide to turn around and there was a spike at the edge of the woods watching me. 40 yards away. One shot, he didn't go far. Texted my son about half mile away and he had it gutted, drug out and in my suv in a half hour. Very happy and going tomorrow and Saturday to try for another.

Tell that boy great job Congratulations! Any buck is a nice buck. Show me a deer hunter says never dozed in woods. I show you a liar. lol
I've been known to snooze a bit myself.

I actually have the rack off the first buck I ever shot with gun think 1970. Wasn't my first season but the second missed a doe first year. Dad screwed the rack to piece oak and my mom sewed little brown cloth on it. This hung in my parents old cottage until dad die.
I put the nickel in there for size reference, didn't have quarter and nickel makes look bigger.

You should try and make it over this way for catfish again next summer.

After seeing no deer opening day and Sunday morning, I've been into deer Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening. Private land Manitowoc County. All natural movement close to bedding areas. Mostly does with a few small bucks, just waiting for the right buck to show up.

Snow predicted for Saturday so looking forward to Saturday night and next weeks muzzle loader season.

Saw one doe Wednesday and that's all I've seen in the national forest. Found a beaver colony a mile away that I set up after lunch that day.

As of yesterday morning, I was a little worried we weren't going to have venison this year. A buddy called and said a friend of his shot a monster of a buck up in Buffalo County, and being a beef farmer, he really did not need the meat. My buddy asked if we'd want it and I answered with a quick "He** yeah!"

Son and I hunted one of our 300 acre turkey hunting farms in the afternoon. It's real bluff country full of deer sign. He took the high ridges and I walked the valley. 10 minutes before the close of shooting time I heard him shoot. He got on the radio and said it was a long shot and he was not sure if he hit, so was going to look for blood. I stood there in the dark and about 5:15 he radioed again and said "Dad, I've got good blood!" About 5 minutes later he called and said "I got him!" One fine, long shot on a nice 8 pointer through the darkening woods. Proud of that boy!

The buck even had the common decency of running downhill, nearly to the trail. We got him gutted and dragged to the trail to meet the landowner on his Gator coming back to check on us because it was so late. He loaded everything up and drove us right to the back of my Suburban.

Took us a couple hours this afternoon to skin, quarter, and get them in a cold fridge to stiffen up. Both bucks were perfect shots with no meat wasted at all so the tribe will not starve!

After not finding a buck I wanted, Hazel and I decide to put a little meat in the freezer on Saturday.

We had a couple unique fawns around that the warden assured me were legal to shoot, but I just couldnt pull the trigger. They tempted me quite often. [Linked Image]
